it's a hand crank. You can turn the winch with the hand crank, same as you would to turn the motor to start it with the same, although you would take the winch out of gear (this is assuming the capstan is crank driven).

They are simplicity itself to use...

Plus their rate of pull can be more finely tuned on the fly than any winch, other than a hydraulic set up to allow it.
