Shift lock over ride?

LXRACR

Hello, just picked up a 1992 LC- real clean with low miles. I have no idea what the "shiftlock override" button does near the shifter, someone help me out? Thanks!

normally, you need to step on the foot brake to shift from P to D. With the shift lock override activated, you can shift from P to D without stepping on the brake.

NO that is not what the Shift Overide does. You push it in if their is a brake circuit failure. If you have a failure in the brake circuit it will not shift out of park unless you press that button or fix the brake circuit failure.

um, that is exactly what the shift ride override button does. Your description of it is exactly the same as mine except you commented on the intent of the button.

So I think we all agree, the shift lock override overrides the shift lock mechanism.
The shift lock mechanism is activated by;
  • Brake not pressed
  • Failure in brake circuit, including a burnt out tail light.
  • I've never tested it but there should be a sensor that prevents you from engaging the parking pawl while the vehicle is moving.

I'm not sure what else.

Disabling the vehicle because a light is burnt out seems a bit extreme, but there it is that how it is.

OK I see what you are saying now. Really the button does nothing unless you are in a jam.
