My cruiser when I bought it, it had a key hidden up in the spare tire. Funny thing is couldn't grab it without lowering the tire, can't lower tire without getting in. I wish they made a mag for the big remote keys. I carry a spare key in my pocket for my 11 f250 because I did lock myself out was in own driveway so wasn't a big deal, but never again. Truck is supposed to prevent this with key in ignition, but it doesn't anymore.

Keys hidden? Yep!, NOPE! - I never do that. I encourage everyone to NOT do that. Insurance issues if the vehicle is stolen and recovered. "But they used your key" - Hate to see how that plays out. if the bad guys want it, why make it easier for them. Now, FORD did something right with the keypad feature on some of the vehicles.

There was a case locally a few years back where there was a 'crew' of people steeling vehicles that had the spare key hidden on the vehicle in various places. Turns out, one of the guys at a local automotive shop was encouraging people to have them cut or order a spare and put it in a hiding spot on the vehicle. Most of the vehicles were desirable vehicles and most were never recovered. The few they did get back, they linked back to the shop and no damage since the spare keys were used. False paperwork for export was recovered also. Went on for a couple years.

You want a spare key incase you lock yourself out with the keys still in there? Get a non chip key cut so you can open the door. Keep it in your wallet. Or buy one of the manufacturers PLASTIC wallet key blanks to keep in your wallet. Some manufacturers like Honda, and Toyota still include them in with the purchase.

Insurance issues? Hmm. Seems that's worth a call to my agent! In my mind unauthorized use it stealing but gotta read that fine print.

You know I've certainly thought about keeping a spare in my wallet instead of on the vehicle. Only thing is the places I'm most worried about locking myself out are usually places where I may or may not have my wallet on me when I jump out of the truck, ie camping in the middle of nowhere. I mean statistically I'd be more likely to exit the vehicle with one or both wallet and keys but I don't trust human error.

Whether or not someone finds a spare I think comes down to how creative you are in hiding it. I wonder if that guy in that story that was telling people to get spares on the vehicles was also telling them where to hide them? ...lol

Just don't put the hide a key in a dumb spot..... Mine is in a place it's impossible to see, and so far up there that if your arm isn't as long as mine (which it's probably not) you wouldn't reach it anyway.

I'll take the risk with insurance. It's a minimal one.

On my 16th birthday I took my road test to get my license. When I got back to the DMV the first thing I did as a licensed driver was locked the keys in the car! That was the last time I did that. When I'm on the trail I always crack a window and check the locks like three times if I'm going to leave the keys inside.

I locked my keys in once too. I made it a habit to always lock the vehicle with the remote, so that I have the keys in my hand. Then they get clipped onto my person with a carabiner.

Thanks and I know but out of warranty and has a couple other issues so will be having them look at it, when I eventually bring it in. Not liking all the electronics in these things nothing but trouble.
Mountainhound, your ignition has a switch or two in there. Might be an issue with one of them failing causing it to forget that the key is in the ignition. Take it to the dealer and explain the issue. They should do that under warranty work for free.\\

I locked the keys in the DoD during the test drive at the dealer. Started carrying the valet key after that.

I got a good guess where and it's a decent spot of the mag can hold on when off roading.

I keep a spare key in mine...

its a 2' section of 2'' steel strap 1/8'' thick. Fits in between the door easily to hit the unlock button on the door.

Its more of a master key. Works on all makes and models!

My "new to me" Tacoma. Has a brand new replacement frame from Toyota so I know it will last many more years. I've already put on a 3" lift and 33" BFG KO2s and had some bed racks built for it. My primary expedition rig is a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee but it has 200K on it !

I have been trying to make my equipment work on either vehicle , the RTT can go on both and I've added outlets and mounts for the IPad and ARB fridge.

I am amazed at the vast variety of aftermarket equipment available for Tacomas, compared to the WK Jeep !

I like the idea of using gear I already own, in this case an iPad. Are you using an LTE enameled iPad or an app using offline maps? If so, which app do you use?

Back on track after 3 pages of keys...

Enjoying this 4Runner almost as much as my 3rd gen. Looking forward to spending a week in the Utah backcountry in a few weeks with this thing.
