Last year our tour was the first of the season up Governor's Basin as the road had only been nicely cleared the day or two before, July 25th if I remember correctly, and the tour company had just started driving on Black Bear a few days before that.

Improvisation usually works out well on such trips. I didn't make it to the Rollins Pass area, but instead hitched an 'extra' ride with the jeep tour company to Engineer's Pass (that's our tourist-hauler Dodge at the right end of this panorama), and I eventually followed the front of my car to Arrastra Gulch, just north of Silverton, 2nd photo. Through my binoculars, I'd swear I saw somebody riding a mountain bike down the switchbacks that seem to exit up and out of the gultch. That's waaayy up there, folks - note to self: do more research on how to reach that road / trail, and make it a goal to visit that spot next summer at the soonest.

Done. Two days ago, actually. And now that I've been waaayy up there, I now know that what I must have seen was someone wearing a big backpack who was quick-stepping down the trail. It's much too steep and rough to bike down. The meadow in my photo last year is the little one more or less square in the center of the two-pic composite below. Second photo is what lies out of sight south of the rim up there, Silver Lake.77blazerchalet said:
