Silverton to Animas Forks

Headed that way next week, it'll be my 7th year in a row to go on jeep tours with my SOA friends (nope, still don't have my Chalet fixed to avoid its long-cruise annoyances). Last year I drove my low-riding VW to the end of the smooth part of the Arrastra Gulch road and hiked the rest of the distance to Silver Lake, and vowed to hike to the Little Giant Basin this year.

Is the Maggie Gulch road as smooth as you show for a long distance? I was under the impression is was narrow and rough. I was planning on scoping out that one next week, along with a few hikes at Red Mountain - Porphryry & McIntyre / Spirit Gulch. When ya don't got ground clearance, ya just do more walkin' or hire somebody else to do the drivin'.:D

Yep, the Maggie Gulch road was pretty smooth the whole way, as I recall.

I headed up to Porphryry Basin last summer and that is a cool area. The road up there was a very narrow shelf with very few places to pass another vehicle. I was glad we did not run into any oncoming traffic that day.

I'm going to be out that way the first week of October. I'm hoping everything won't be snowed in. I was out there mid-October last year and it was too late. I'm planning on making a trip out there every year as my vacation. I stay in a cabin in Lake City and then do day trips while I'm out there. I love visiting that part of the country. If I didn't hate cold and winter as much as I do, I'd probably have figured out a way to live there. But I really, really don't like cold. At all.

Yep grew up there..went to Ft. Lewis College, Mesa College and CSU. this really reminds me of all the good times and 4X4 adventures I had in Co. but like you said Lousy winters (just hated freezing my butt off and all the snow driving)...found Oregon and the best of all worlds, mts, lots of trees, ocean, high deserts, and mild winters......but i do miss the mountains especially the west slope sometimes....then I wake up and my grass is green all year...flowers blooming 10 months, etc...if I want to see snow....just 45 min up the road. O yeah forgot.....The Fishing Is Great! All year. I should get back for a visit.....Has the smog killed the east slope yet?

Just got home from a month of Moab UT and Silverton CO. We have done all those trails and more through the years. It is our second home almost. Thanks for sharing.
