Original poster, What we've learned is there is not a lot of value out there. Making campers is expensive and so even a basic model is not cheap. I wish it weren't so, but that is the case. We decided on a vagabond drifter. They also have build outs coming out for the interior (check out drifter threads on tacoma world) in a collaboration with Goose Gear. We are keeping minimalist wanting the truck to be a truck when we aren't using it for outdoor adventures, but this might be an option if you are willing to pony up. Good luck. Lots of trade offs here to weigh.
