Simple stove setup

As part of my continued pursuit towards a simpler, lighter and more compact setup I am looking at replacing my Coleman two burner (with 1lb bottles) to a single burner and a single carbon steel pan (plus kettle).

What I would really like is a very stable single burner that uses white/coleman fuel. Unfortunately I can't seem to find one that would be stable with a carbon steel 12-15" skillet. I like the idea of the skottle but it looks a bit too short and I don't like that it doesn't have a handle for dumping out food/cleaning plus I don't want to keep using propane bottles as I only use them for cooking and don't carry a lantern, heater, etc.

I really really like the camp chef butane single burner layout/form factor but am concerned about low temps.

I typically only cook for two but we burn a lot of calories so we eat a ton. Plus we like to make scratch tortillas, fajitas, etc that involve a lot of space but only require a single pan.

Ideas? Thoughts?

I carry a MSR Dragonfly in my truck all the time. It is very stable, white gas fired and will burn most flammable liquids if you run out of white gas. I use a 10" skillet on it all the time. The only downside is the flame spread is small for a big skillet as the stove was designed for compactness. I use a home made flame diffuser with the skillet with decent results.

You need a Coleman 500. Wide, stable, holds lots of gas and large enough for a skillet.

Altho' not propane, I've been using a single burner coleman powerpack propane stove. It has a large surface area for a big pan and sits low to the countertop so is very stable. it also simmers really well. I added a pezio ignitor from a bbq to make it matchless. I've been really happy with it.

You might look in here to see if anything, suits your fancy. We've had a small 1 with just plain handles for about 3 years now. It's a great companion to our Asst. of cast iron.

Thanks the 500A looks to be the ticket.....now to find one reasonable priced.

Thanks, that was my backup if what I wanted doesn't exist. Really I would like set up but running on liquid fuel.

I have both the cadac and the Coleman party grille. While I use both regularly I absolutely love my cadac.. Its over 20 years old and belonged to my dad before I got it and it's still working flawlessly.

You can often find old Coleman stuff at yard sales, flea markets or antique shops (though antique shops tend to be overpriced.)

Wife picked this up for me in 2014 (she knows I collect old Coleman stoves and lanterns) at a yard sale. The price was $2. And it came with the cooking drum, too.

Cooking drum/wind screen, sits on top of the stove and provides a nice level surface. I think this one's from the 50's but they're out there.
