Sinagua Equinox Calendar at the V-V

Well, our first day back in Flagstaff was awesome, centered around a nice family outing to the V-V Homestead. The actual ranch has been around since the homestead rights were issued back around 1900, and has been an Historic Site, open to the public, since 1996.

There are numerous glyphs along the creek, all strangely spaced at 1.8 miles apart. The site we went to is thought to have particular religious significance due to the calendar.

Here we started at the remains of the old ranch house.

The chimney is the only remaining structure, and has the brand built in to the backside:

And here is the center piece. You can see the two rocks that protrude from the face of the cliff. These are the two rocks that, during the height of the vernal equinox, allow the sun through at a specific angle. The shaft of light hits two significant figure in the glyphs, and pass over a "man" between the two glyphs...quite amazing for a site that is thought to be from 850 BCE.

All in all, a wonderful day!

Rather erie being strategically spaced apart like that... thanks for sharing!
The two "shaft rocks" were the placed there by the shaman...so they say.

Apparently, there are 8 some sites along Beaver Creek where we were. We also saw some old irrigation canals that were done by the Sinagua. Damn cool.
