Skamper info and questions....

I am going to look at a used Skamper in the morning -
Seller does not know model/year/have pictures/or can tell me what it needs.

Only that it is for a small truck.

I have the 5ft Taco bed and assuming it's 6 feet long, plan to leave teh tailgate down.

I have searched the web for hours and not having much luck:
weight? Even a range of weight...
years made and model numbers, lots of posts asking for anyone with an owners manual, but no responses.
There appears to be no parts support...
What type of damage should I just walk away from no matter how cheap it is?

Do any of you leave the TC on year round? It does turn to winter here...

What hit to mileage do you get? When towing my Conqueror I go from 17 to 13.5mpg....

I am assuming the weight to be 1200 pounds? (based on a FWC at 800) and with the wind catching cab over, can I expect a similar drop?

TIA

When I was looking at them I never saw anything about a 6' model, the shortest I ever saw was 8' that would fit a short bed truck but not the extra short 5' beds.

Mntbike28,

Sorry I didnt see this earlier.... How did the skamper work? I bought an 89 060S. Its a 6ft version for a small truck. I custom mounted it on an F-250.

Anyways, Wet weight is about 900lbs. Or that is what it says on the camper. Ill have to double check later.

Let me know how it goes. Ive had a really hard/impossible time finding any info on these things as well.

Picts on the link in my sig. :smiley_drive:

Thanks, still waiting...

The owner was sent to the hospital (older gentleman) the day of my appointment. Maybe this Saturday.

I am REAL worried about the lack of info on the web and the lack of any parts. I don't think I have ever researched a product and found so little info out there as I have this.....

What mileage hit do you get with it on?

Thanks

Well man, it depends on what you want to do with it. They are built of plywood like most 1980's campers. But they are simple, and easy to work on.

I would say go check out the camper take some pictures, and see how much the guy wants for it. You can try and find a used FWC for 4-6 grand, or get something that is MUCH cheaper like the Skamper that will work fine for starter and does pretty much the same thing.

I bought mine for $700, but there was no water damage, and the canvas was in great condition minus one quarter size hole. The thing works great, and has paid for itself easy with the amount of quick trips I do. I did however need some work to get usable though. Mostly cleaning and just going through the thing.

For MPG's, since I have a F-250 Diesel, I only noticed maybe 1mpg loss.

Keep us sposted.

did you ever go look at this?

I have an 8ftr in my 2010 tundra...love it..(could be that I only have $300 total in the whole thing including new bedfoams)...

mine had waterdamage that was pretty severe (I got a repair thread on here somewhere)..but easy to fix..and we've hauled it all over hells half-acre already...

wife gives it 2 thumbs up...water..stove..and a privy with potty for when we're camped...
