Slee's Tundra powered 80 series

At ExPo'11 Our stand was next to Cristo Slee's exhibit and he had his 80 series TLC there with a fresh install of a Tundra 4.7L V8 and transmission - retaining the original Xcase from the 80. It is geared 4.88, I believe.

This is an amazing install. It looks totally factory and employs no engine or transmission adaptors. New motor mounts, of course, and a custom tranny cross member/skid plate. He said that the electronics was a mjor job, but it looks like everything was in order and working well.

I drove the truck one evening and it was solid with good power all through the range. My impression, when I finished the test drive... THIS is what an 80 should be!

I am awaiting some more details from Cristo as he gets it dialed in and does some mileage tests. Meanwhile, I am looking at my 80 with new eyes.

Very cool, I would love to do that with my 92. I had a Toyota mech a few years ago tell me to buy a 4.7 asap because it would become the thing to do in the near future.

resh install of a Tundra 4.7L V8 and transmission - retaining the original Xcase from the 80.

I'm pretty sure the transmission is from a 100 LC. With the 100 series trans you can retain the factory shifter and TC shifter. I was lusting over this as well.

I have been gathering info and racking up favors to start a 5.3 swap, but after seeing the 4.7 and talking to them about the differences between the two swaps I'm going with a 4.7! Any one have a wrecked 100 they want to give me :sombrero:

Holly cow, I knew this was coming, but damn! Can't wait to see the full writeup. Great work as usual Christo!

Too bad they didn't use the new Tundra's 5.7L engine. But that would require the 6spd auto and a host of other problems as well.

it looks like a great setup but the cost is insane! I called and they said
12-15k for the whole setup...that makes me wonder why not just do a hg job and bolt on a sc for a third of that???

...hopefully costs will come down at some point.

Not sure I would place the cost in the insane category. You have to know what is involved and where the costs are. Donor motor and tranny from a 100 series (Tundra can be used, but you need to buy more parts to make it work). ECU wiring harness. Then the custom pieces to bolt everything in.

In additional the price includes a complete new exhaust with cats. Stainless steel Tig welded. Driveshaft modifications and then the labor to put it all together. If you have never done one of these, it would be easy to think it should be cheaper, but the devil is in the details and it adds up pretty quick.

price seems inline with a properly done 5.3 V8 swap from my research.

Engine swaps never seem to make finacial sense. The "other" reasons are what make you go down this path

A host of other problems and would not fit the truck, transfercase drops is on the wrong sides. It would be awesome, but I don't think it is a realistic swap currently.

yes not cheap but I was expecting closer to 20K...wow...nice to know I have a v8 option in a "few" years...
