I have a Jeep, but I towing my trailer with an4x4 Ford F250 with a 7.3 Turbo Diesel and Manual Transmission with Reading Utility Box in the rear. So tongue weight and trailer weight is the least of my concern. But with that said I'm a minimalist and I travel months at the time so I take off whatever I don't need off

Months at a time? I'm envious!

Maybe it is more of a drag issue, its perfectly fine in town and up to 50mph or so. And the tent does stick up taller than my jeep. I will eventually be adding fuel and a battery so well see how more weight affects it.

Man I wish I could travel for months at a time!

One thing I do is, what belong to the towing vehicle stay on the towing vehicle and what belong to the trailer in the trailer and with that said, Fuel is kept in the towing vehicle. and water stay in the trailer, but I also keep extra water in the tow vehicle. High lift jack and recovery equipment stay in the tow vehicle too. I like redundancy I'm retired military (that is how I can stay months at the time and joined at 17 so at 41 I was retired) So I come from a school of thought that 2 is one and one is none. So I always keep water filtration device in hand that way water is never an issued. (yes you can find water pockets even in the desert, just have filter it or you can milked a cactus or two) Cooking and eating utensils I keep that to a minimum.

There some good info. There times I scratch my head about offroad pulling trailer. I know u can't pull it everywhere a jeep can go and you need to pick ur battles but my jeep is close to Kmrtnsn I have 3.8 with 3.21 gears and 33 tires. 2 1/2 inch lift that get me around really well. I'm not rock climber of course but really anxious to get trailer off road and see what happens. Being in west Tex my closest area would be big bend and there is a road called black gap and there are 2 places that will test ya goin down narrow steep canyon wall and back up others side. Probably won't be able to get down there until after holidays but just reading what I've read so far I think I'll be fine my weight right now full of fluids is 1730 and on Hwy it's no prob I do have 6 speed which I love I can ride gears little higher rpm. Think I'm still on right track with what I've put on trailer still need awning and fridge

Well like you say pick your battle, reality dictate that the trailer can not go anywhere you go. Just like your can not go anywhere you may want to go either. So best is to set a base camp and continue on your vehicle. If where you want to go is not accessible by vehicle nothing that a camel pack, MRE and good pair of hiking boots can take you anywhere. is all part of the adventure. Even doing the repairs here and there I part of that journey.

The Scout trailer is a nice unit. I know the two guys that were behind the design and execution and they were very picky about everything, but it was designed mostly around storage capacity.

I like the F250sd21 trailer also due to its low profile and use of the Bedslide. Once again it seems to be based mostly on storage also.

Usually trailers are always a compromise due to space and weight restrictions.

We design trailers with a few different things in mind: strength & ability/ living space & comfort / storage / weight

My Sergeant trailer has the same price/footprint of the two mentioned above but has a much larger tent but less storage than the ones mentioned above. What we found was by building in the living necessities (Kitchen/water system/LP system) to the trailer there was a lot less you needed to store inside it and it weighs less in the end.

Amen to that! I had to deal with a broken shock mount on the White Rim Trail. It added to the adventure.
So all of you guys building your new Smittybuilts be sure to get out there and use them! Also come back here and post lots of pictures! :victory:

Yep I still remember the summer in Valley of the God with flat and the the spare leaking with a cheap tire repair kids in the middle of July I was sweating like a pig, but her part of the adventure and 2013 I have to drop the transmission on my TJ in parking lot to replace a clutch in Colorado. Part of the adventure.

Working the kinks here and there, but I believe my kitchen is pretty much done
