So, I miss my LJ....

I was thinking once I got mine installed I could later look for stainless steel bolts and replace them one by one. Easier to work withiout stuff falling on your face.

I don't know whether the 150lb is the capacity of the side rails, or the capacity of the stock crossbars. Do you know if using Thule bars with the rails lets you carry more load without damaging the unibody?

Well, I've had a lot of weight on a set of thule bars and am actually planning on running 4 total bars, to spread the weight of my canoe or loads of lumber.

As for the drip rail or unibody capacity, I'm not sure?? thats an excellent question. I think I'd be hard pressed to exceed 200lbs+ up there. I think a load of lumber or my canoe is less than 100lbs, though, so I should be ok.

Buy the best, and you'll only cry once

***1992 XJ Cherokee Trailer Hitch Wiring Install***

The hitch I bought had wiring that I intended to use to connect to my trailer. It had the standard round 7pin trailer socket on one end and the stock cherokee taillight 8pin-style plug on the other:

Long story short, I found out that Cherokee's of my vintage did not have an open plug ready and waiting to become a tow package model if the customer so wished. (It could be that mine is just developmentally challenged..haha...that would figure.)

This meant I had to go a different route with my wiring. oops! [smacks forehead]

After searching and contemplating doing the wiring/splicing job myself, I decided upon a plug and play style kit that gives me a 4pin connector that is common with Uhaul trailers with no brakes or surge brakes, and a 7 pin that will work with my trailer wiring as well as trailers that have electric brakes.

Here goes:

Here's the two kits I required...

This is PN 42455 at any trailer/auto place. I went to san diego trailer cuz they had it in stock, and they're good people.
DSC06075r.jpg

Didn't get the part number off the adapter below, but its a standard 4 pin to 7 pin adapter that most places should carry.
DSC06074r.jpg

Take your spare tire out, if you still carry yours back here, like I do. (for the time being)
DSC06079r.jpg

4 screws and 2 bolts later and you're in like flynn.
DSC06080r.jpg

This is the connection between the taillight (left) and harness (right).
DSC06081r.jpg

The 42455 splice, as seen below, simply goes in line between the two.
DSC06085r.jpg

I don't know the magic behind this, but this black box converts the signal from the harness and powers both left and right taillights. (So i'm told) It sticks on with a foam, peel-away, double-stick pad.

Cherokee's seem to have this plug already in place to bring wiring out. (If not intentional, it sure is handy coincidence.) I scored a small "X" in the plug for the cable to come through. I re-used the wire protector from the factory wiring setup to protect the wires and then ziptied it up out of sight.

This is how it looks from the rear.
DSC06091r.jpg

I used a test light to test each set of lights (running, Right T-signal, Left T-signal, brakes) and all was well. All told,
it took me about 1.5 hours working slow in the heat today. Very doable.

I'm very glad I waited, saved up a bit and got a quality kit. It helped also that the hitch I bought had a 7 pin bracket already welded on.

BTW, all I have to do, is pull the wiring apart in the middle a bit past the white zip tie to access the 4pin connector if I'm pulling a uhaul trailer.

Why did you get rid of the alloys? Those are the BEST looking Jeep wheels! I've been trying to find some for mine.

argggh...I've actually still got the alloys on. They're (grits teeth) growing on me.

I like that they have the "Jeep" logo on them...I think that when I Olive drab my truck, that'll be the deciding factor.

Camping lab awning, soon to be mounted. :) I'll put my thoughts about the awning in my awning thread in Gen. Vehicle Mods

Do you have any pics of this part? I have the opposite problem...I have the "stock cherokee taillight 8pin-style plug" out to the receiver, but I'm missing the 7pin trailer connector.

I need to figure out what the part number is for this :)

Thanks!

Dude where are you located?

No pics, but I have this part, if you want it. its a straight shot from the 8 pin stock plug to the 7pin trailer socket.

I paid about 50.00 for my setup, but I didn't have a choice, cuz as you say mine was the opposite of yours with no plug to tap into.

I'm almost positive this isn't made anymore...lemme know.

There are a few serious issues with those wheels though. First, it's not uncommon to have that particular style not balance well. I don't know if they bend or warp or just come out of round but I've seen this issue of several XJ's. If you can't get them to balance and you think the tires are crappy. 10-1 its the wheels.

Another problem is they tend to either seize up and not come loose after they have been on for awhile or they will loosen up and fall off not long after you rotate them.

Keep a close eye out for those issues.

Hey Brian, Ad is my partner in crime up here in Canuckistan. :)

You know I've never seen this part in the buff. Don't know what it is - factory setup is rare up here I guess.

I'm sure the shipping to upstate NY wouldn't be a big deal.

Awesome, I just pm'd him, but if you see him first, tell him if he pays for the shipping - its his, no worries. It looks to be in working order, but at the least you'll have a template or OEM connectors to work with.

I'll post up some pictures of it, so you guys can be sure...

Camping Lab Awning is mounted. Very Slick, though I haven't had tome to actually unfurl the awning yet!!

I'm gonna grab a beer and my camera and setup a fun outdoor area today. "Driveway Safari" I guess you can call it.

Yeah, I wanna see pics of that. :)

I haven't decided how I want to mount one on my Jeep. With any luck I'll have my machine out of the garage today - then I get to think about the fun stuff like awnings and racks and such.

yeah, when the freeway stumble started, I was like, "crap, did I spend money on the wrong thing?" LOL. Then I smacked myself and re-realized that my 1992 is a used car, and will ALWAYS need repairing from time to time.

I'd much rather troubleshoot a $30.00 tps sensor or replace a $200.00 radiator after an honest 10 year stint with the original one, than be paying $450.00 a month to a bank, like I was with my Unlimited. That leaves a solid $200.00 bucks or so in my budget, after putting the rest away for repairs, to do fun stuff. I'm good with that!!

Makes me do good research on stuff I spend our money on. Thats half the fun for me!
