Colorado Road Trip From San Diego

My wife and I did an 8 day road trip through Utah/Colorado last week to celebrate our 50th birthdays together. 8 days in a row riding mountain bikes and camping in God's country in our Krawler 459

Build pictures are good, and give me ideas of things to do. But trailers in the mountains, or desert, or wherever, are wonderful! They give me ideas of places to go! Thank you!!

Great pics! We've been all over Utah and SW Colorado in our 510, just keeps getting better.
Thanks! We'll be back for sure. Drove through so many beautiful places between camp spots and it was hard to stick to our itinerary.

You're welcome! These were the only pictures with our trailer included but I have tons more of our mountain bike adventures. 8 days in a row camping and riding and the comfort of these little trailers makes that possible. Can't wait for the next adventure...

Where is Upland?

Upland is on the western edge of San Bernardino County just east of the Los Angeles County line between I-10 and Ca-210 freeways. It's about 25-30 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles.

Easy to get there if you don't mind SoCal traffic.

Gabe and the guys are awesome and Gabe's wife, Becky, is beautiful!

Rain rain go away

Anyone else have issues with water getting into your open hatch? We're desert dwellers so we choose to escape to monsoon ridden Colorado in July every summer. We've also been caught in a few snows too. Having to close the hatch during storms was getting tiresome. Thankfully, a friend's Foxwing was trashed during a microburst a few years back (well, unfortunately for them) so I had high quality ripstop to work with.

My crafty friend and I came up with easy rainguards for the open hatch. We have the hot water heater box on one side, and made a flap to cover that too. They attach with Velcro on the hatch and have tie downs on the bottom. It made a world of difference during light to moderate rains.

I will be making some using keder railing that clip to the side of the trailer.

Awning for galley hatch

We're trying this: https://www.amazon.com/Hasika-Trailer-Camping-Hatchback-Anti-uv/dp/B00ZKYSCOM

Had it out a couple of times so far, and so far so good. It did blow down during a high wind when we were out one day, but no damage. We have a roof rack, so securing the front edge isn't hard.

It's big enough and tall enough that the hatch can be fully open on our 510xs (on 37" tires), so it should work with most of the So-Cal Teardrops. It did barely touch the sides of the hatch the first time we used it because the ground sloped down and away from the trailer on the galley end. Construction is decent, but I had low expectations so it's a bit better than I expected, and it's the only thing I've found that's fairly specific for a use like this. There are bigger and better ones out there like the Foxwing but they are much more involved and more than I wanted. Not sure any of those will fit over the hatch when open like this one does. We'll see how it holds up long term.

I like that it gives you a few feet of additional covered ground behind the trailer too.

That looks great! What are you using behind/under the back hatch?

We use a Foxwing awning. Fits perfectly under the opened hatch and not too cumbersome to move when needing to close the hatch. The Foxwing was a game changer for us. With the added option of tapered walls, we can insulate the outdoor space around the teardrop pretty well. Even during snow storms.

But the Foxwing goes UNDER the open hatch. I know some folks want the hatch covered.

Hey all! I just found a SoCal Sierra local to me that looks to be in amazing shape. It’s a 2007 and has had dual batteries and LED lights added.
My question is I live in the Midwest, own a Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon, do I really need a off-road Teardrop or can I drag the Sierra down a dirt road or two? I can get this trailer for about a 1/3 the cost of a new off-road one. Thinking it can’t be too hard to upgrade wheels, tires, and fenders.

Thoughts?

PS I know the “off-road” ones have lots of other upgrades to make them off-road worthy. Not just some fancy tires;)
