Spare tire carrier ideas....

I'm looking for some input, I am about to start building a rear bumper with a integrated tire carrier. The current idea is a swing out style carrier but the issue I am haci G is lifting and lowering the tire. I have 395/85r20 Goodyears and as you can imagine they are heavy and the back of the truck is tall... I am trying to see what people are doing for this size tire, I had a idea of building a setup like the H1 hummers used with a screw setup to lower the tire on an arm. I am still playing with that idea but want to see what else is out there. Here is a few pics of the rear of the truck as it sits now. Thanks in advance for any help. 20190111_125741.jpg20181222_115024.jpg

I like what earth roamer did with their huge tires. They used an atv winch to raise and lower the spare. It would add weight to your swing out assembly so maybe just put 15’ of synthetic rope on it and mount the winch on top of your camper box to lift the tire up to your swing arm?

I also investigated the carrier used on H1s. No fab skills so looked for pricing. ?‍♂️? Holy smokes they’re expensive. Good luck with whatever solution you come up with.

I was thinking of something similar to that, I like the idea of being able to winch down the tire!

nice rig, curious to see what you come up with. I hate lifting my 37s, I must be getting old.
Thanks! I hated lifting's 37's and now with these, its not even a option....

I have given some thought to that but the box is aluminum so I would have to build a frame on top of the box to carry the load. Not out of the question but I would rather keep weight off the top! lol

I thought this was a clever solution.

I like that, I could possible run it off of a 18V impact driver so I don't wear out my shoulder!

Or perhaps a variation of this?

Is that yours? If so how heavy does it feel with that tire?

I just put one of these on my truck. It’s handy for other things as well. You could put the short one HB sells on the roof or on the bumper. YouTube has videos of people doing just that and adding an ATV winch instead of a hand crank. View attachment 500908
I actually have something similar to that right now for loading my generator into the box. I had thought about adding a pocket on the bumper for it to go into but it might be a lot of trouble...

I know it's a old thread but I know I hate a thread with no closure! What I came up with was a fold down style mount that uses trailer ramp springs. Ocnce down or up the gate is pinned in place. These springs make lowering and raising the tire easy enough, only downside is it would be difficult to raise the carrier without a tire one it because the springs are strong!

That is basically the same as the carrier I had made. Those tailgate type springs are just the ticket. I tried several different style springs and eventually a friend came up with the idea of those springs so I had him fab it up. I modified it to work with my truck. The beauty I’d that style carrier is you can roll the tire on and off the rack. I put a lock on mine so when it is folded down and the tire is off it doesn’t flip closed and decapitate me. Well and a 35 on a bead lock is far from the weight you are dealing with. Nice job.

That's a clean setup! I installed a hitch pin locking system for the same reason, I don't want to loose body parts because there is a ton of tension in those springs! I had to have the tire mounted when I installed the rack and springs because there is too much tension to lower the rack without the tire... I like the simplicity and how stout the spring and pivot is, especially with how heavy my tire is.
