I feel your pain
I have a Tacoma and I mounted my spare, HiLift, and one fuel can on the back bumper. The rack is as wide as the rear of the Tacoma. I originally built an extension for the slide in reciever that gave me about 6" extra but I did not like extending the pivot point between truck and trailer out like that (similar to the photo above). I have since extended the trailer tongue with a 14" Brophy extension and I am much happier with that. With the longer tongue, the AT Horizon tows nicer and backs up better.
It is still not quite back far enough to open the swing away and allow me to open my tailgate but as mentioned above, I can back the trailer to a 45 degree angle and all works fine.
