Spooling new synth line on winch?

The telephone pole sounds like the easiest way to go. Assume no crossing and just traditional straight spooling.

I like the idea of crossing, and plan to redo mine that way. The reason is it gets so tight when you winch, you can't pull it off manually with free spool. The crossing should prevent that.

I run a Superwinch X9, so my install is a bit different than a Warn. I run the tag end of the line through the mount hole, set the grub screw, run the tag end about 3/4 the length of the drum , and then electrical tap it to the drum. This helps to hold it in place while I wrap the first layer of drum, and also gives the line something to bite. Then I wrap the drum 8 times snugging the line tight together, then apply load to the end before spooling. I like the telephone poles at the Junior High School near my house, they have the large concrete bases. Make the line taught, and apply the E-brake for some light resistance, then spool it in nice and symmetrical. I have found with a good tight base wrap, the subsequent layers will wrap nicely.

Not quite sure why you need a retainer?

It gives the rope a way to grip the drum. Synthetic doesn't 'bite' the drum like steel, so when you have a lot of line out it can slip and pull out the set screw (which isn't meant for pulling)...at which point you aren't winching anything.

The photo below shows how you create the bite. It can be done on a Warn or Superwinch style connector

Never tried it. Though I have been running synthetic on my winches since 2000 when Bill Burke introduced me to it, and never had a need to run it any other way. I think I can hear Bill saying, "Really, seems like an excuse to not properly spool your winch line!" :)

Here's a video describing the zig-zag method
