Sportsmobile Sprinter Prototype (?)

I first saw this little charmer at the OC auto show, and again about 1 hour ago tooling down Talbert about 1/2 mile from my house. It was probably on its way to "Car Mecca" in Huntington Beach for some reason. Thanks to adventureduo.com for the photo- I googled "Sportsmobile Sprinter 4x4" and it was one of the first photos to pop up.

Drat, can't insert the photo or an active link for some reason. Well, you guys probably know what it looks like anyway. The red one.

I'm not a dirt bike guy, but I know a bunch of people who tow racecars in various forms- they general opinion is that you want the garage separate from the living area, or else your froot loops stink like hi-test.

I've always wondered why the 'toy box' campers are so popular. Besides the stink, you'd be tracking in a lot of mud and dirt.

Hey, I got some Hella lights, too, so now I got me an excuse to post pictures of Mog Junior. :)

Seriously, the mid-length Sprinters make great little expedition campers. 20+ mpg, about the same footprint as a Tacoma double cab and more nimble, cruise all day at 75. The drawbacks are obvious: no 4WD (despite something like three million rumors that it was coming), no aftermarket off-road parts, and sufficiently it's black-boxed that you can get disabled with no hope of a trail fix. Beyond that, if you're planning on expeditioning "off-pavement" as opposed "off-road", you should be considering one.

The inline-5 diesel is a great little engine, too. On the Sprinter list, we hear from expediters and FedEx contractors with 300K+ miles with no engine work at all. The jury is still out on the new gas and diesel V-6s, though the new model (2007-on) is a good deal more upscale in finish and ride.

This little Sprinter is the reason I ended up getting rid of my big Mog camper. The Mog was better in the far boonies, but it's really nice to be able to comfortably drive this camper through downtown traffic, park in any space and feel good about the fuel economy.

Toy boxes = owners who really like their bikes.

You know, that pic with the bike in the tent struck a cord.

When I was a kid in Colorado I worked summers at a Scout camp near Miramonte Reservoir. One summer I rode my Yamaha 650 Turbo from my home in Cortez to the camp, and spent the 6 weeks sharing my canvas wall tent with my bike.

BTW, anybody know what kind of bike that is in the lingerie pic?

Sprinter Traction Panels

They're from OK Offroad. $130 a pair plus $32 for shipping in the continental US. Website says they weigh 25 pounds, but mine are about 30 each. If I had a lighter vehicle, I might consider aluminum and plastic panels as well.
