SR axle cracked while driving

So this is kinda bizzare, wanted to share with you guys.

As the title states, my buddy Denis cracked his rear axle while driving his 95 SR. And he doesnt even do much wheeling. He said he was going about 45mph when he heard a thump with some grinding, pulled over and saw his truck sag on the left side, looked underneath and saw a huge crack in the housing.

It is now replaced with another unit from PicknPull

I don't think this is an issue we need to be concerned with nor would it be something that would concern me if I were looking to buy a Montero. It's hard to say if it mfg defect or caused by overuse but I think that it is such a rare occurrence that is does not matter. It is something I have never seen and those are very good pics. Thanks for sharing and I am glad he was able to fix it.

I've personally seen this happen once to my second Montero. Then have read about it happening 4 or 5 others.

I think it's a defect but not a major issue.

That has happened a few times that I know of, but it's odd that it happened to a 95,it was mostly happening to the early ones, but they weeped oil before they began to crack visibly. As said above it's quite rare and probably caused by a defect rather than being a fault with all of them, and it got through 18 years with this defect so they seem pretty strong to me

Ouch. It happens but very rarely on gen 2's and usually when they're wheeled hard... Very hard. Only place I've heard of this happening is in Australia where they're actually used off road.

it looked like it happened on the weld seam. So most likely a factory defect. Ive never heard of them breaking either :coffee:
