Star Trails - Night on the move

Who doesn't love star trail photos?
Spent a couple hours in the middle of nowhere listening to new music and letting my camera sit out in the cold. ( I was in the Tundra )

Then I realized we don't even have light pollution in our front yard; so when I got home I stayed up and did more. Taking and processing images until +/- 5am is captivating.

Top shot was 32 minutes. Bottom was approx 27 minutes.
Obviously depends on ambient light, etc; but pretty easy to figure out after a few trial runs

I've made a few attempts and actually prefer shooting at different angles rather than using the North star.

1. From this weekend. In early twilight.

2. This shot sucks but the movement of the stars is quite interesting. It has curvature in both directions.

3. This was my first attempt. Not a very balanced composition but it is pretty hard to get a composition in the dark sometimes.

going to have to get out of the city and try these. Excellent shots. Its always so damn cloudy here in the UK though! I take it stars/clouds dont mix to well.

1 minute exposure, f10, ISO100

30 minute exposure, f5, ISO100. Brought out the purple and blues in this one.

It would help those of us who want to learn to make images like this to have a starting point with the camera.

22 min/F4.8/ISO 100 - looking north, 5 hrs after sunset

12 min/F5/ ISO 100 - looking east, 2 hrs after sunset

I got a bit cheated tonight... had this "night before opening day of rifle season enjoying the silence in the woods" idea, but then the moon decided to just show up and cast its light upon me. (you can see it, bottom left) Had to abort at approx 21 mins. But hey, it was cool. Sitting there watching jets flying over, satellites, critters, and general early winter silence = epic. You can see how much light the moon was kicking out as I aborted the mission the trees were exposed behind me in the couple of seconds it took to stop the exposure.

Even with the moon contamination, that's still a very cool shot! I like!

Light contamination is from a city over 80 miles away I believe.

Okay, without descending into an african swallow/coconut type discussion, how are you doing these shots? I spent hours at night on the rim of the grand canyon trying out various settings and shutter speeds, and just got crap.

The only night shot that I got that was even usable were these two (obviously not star trail duration exposures)
