Hi There, I just wanted to say great job on the painting. I like the color. I just picked up a jeep trailer and am looking to do some painting as well. What color or type/brand did you go with? Again fantastic work all around. Enjoy your new addition!

I actually picked up the paint at Gander Mountain. It's the olive drab that they sell for painting tree stands, boats, and duck blinds. I wasn't sure how it would work out, but I painted my Willys with it last year and it has held up fine. I had some left so I did the trailer too. Here's a link to the paint I used: http://www.hunterspec.com/Updateable/update_display.cfm?pageID=766&categoryID=29

Looks good Stick.

I ended up removing those hooks because I couldn't get them to hook up to my hitch on the XJ. I just use those hooks chain connectors.

The hooks are rather large, but I have an aftermarket hitch on my XJ and the hooks seem to work out okay with my hitch. I think it's going to be a problem for my YJ hitch though.

Updates: 3/16/08

Few more updates:

Added some white star decals to complete the military look:

Added a spare tire carrier to the back. The carrier is either from an early CJ5 or from an M38A1. Either way it works well for my trailer application.

Mounted an ammo can up front to store gear, rope, tarp, tools, etc. It's got a rubber gasket and is waterproof.

Made some tarp supports out of PVC pipe. It should help to keep rain and debris out of the trailer while it's parked outside:

Added a cheap camo tarp for storage. I'm going to get a nice canvas tarp that fits a little better, but I had this camo tarp already, so it will do for now:

I also picked up a spare wheel:

UPDATE 5/28/08

I got some new tires for the trailer. The Goodyear Wranglers just didn't look right and I was having trouble finding a used spare in the 30x9.5 size anyway, so I decided to go with three new military tires:

Those tires look good on those rims. The spare tire looks like it could come up some. I know that metal is pretty thin if you go up higher. Looks sweet though. Good job!

I've always loved the Willys Jeeps especially ones with trailers behind them.

Great job on the restoration.

I added some Yakima 66" cross bars and Low Rider mounts to the M416. Now I can use my Yakima bike racks and kayak carriers on the trailer too:

Looks great - I plan to build a lid with a rack once I get my trailer build going (it's still collecting dust in the garage), but it looks like you can just clamp right to the lip. Other than using the lowrider mounts, did you have to do anything special?

Nope. The LowRider mounts will clamp right to the lip. Nothing else needed.

Picked up some "J-cradles" today and mounted them up to the trailer. Lifting the kayaks onto the trailer is much better than lifting them on top of the XJ. Still leaves plenty of room for a pair of bikes and access to the stuff in the trailer. Can't wait to load this thing up and go camping.

Not exactly what the military had in mind for the M416, but it works well as a kayak carrier none the less.
