Starting my overland build with my 07 JKU

I've had my 07' JKU for a couple months now. Got a good deal on it with less than 70,000 miles and had seen little, if any off-road use. I'm going to build it for overland use and have only done a couple mods so far.

What I've done so far is a 2" lift and went from stock 29" tires to 33's. I purchased the MB Chaos 5 wheels and Goodyear Duratrac 285/75/R16 tires. In total, I've gained about 4" of lift.

Other mods I want to do this year is chop the ends off the stock bumper, put caps on them and add a winch and bull bar to the front. I'm debating about keeping the fastback or looking for a different top. I'm not sure whether I want to put a roof rack on. If I do, it might look a little odd with the fastback top. I also need to find something for storing and hauling additional fuel. I'm currently looking at racks that go on the back to hold additional gear. Someday would love a RTT, but that's a long ways down the road. Other addition this year will be a CB.

Looking forward to getting back out and exploring the country as I used to do. Any suggestions for mods would be welcomed. I would like to actually put a different bumper on the front but due to budget constraints, going to stick to the stock bumper for now and modify it. Still debating about additional lighting on the front as well.

I like that bowless top on the JKU's. They don't look terrible with roof racks. Then again I had both on a TJ. How crazy are you looking to get with the overland build? Gen-Right makes a larger fuel tank and also an underbody water tank for them.

Warrior Products has a roof rack that follows your top's line. You might want to check out their Renegade rack.

I would think that the fastback top would limit the amount of gear you could carry in the rear. Might not be consistent with overlanding. Just my two cents for what it's worth. Enjoy!

Thanks for the info. I'll have to look into the Gen-Right equipment. I like the fastback look too and don't really want to get rid of it. I guess I could always try it with the Gobi and if I don't like the look, get a different top.
