Not a chaser, but a volunteer spotter for the NWS and a local tv station. Fortunately we live near NOAA and the regional NWS headquarters so we have a convenient place to attend training each year.

Our county ARES/RACES group gets called up and we support the NWS every time a thunderstorm comes through the county, but we don't chase, just report from wherever we are.

Here in Texas, ARES and RACES are organized by county, but in Colorado I'm not sure (even though I grew up there). I would start by searching for Adams or Arapahoe County ARES and RACES. All I had to do here was participate in a couple of training nets until they got to know my call sign, then I had to fill out an application form and was accepted and put on the call up phone list.

Yes. All the storm chasing I know of (and all of the ARES/RACES work by definition) uses licensed ham frequencies.

I guess I should stop putting it off and take my tests then.

Yes the HAM license is definitely a must. We also participate in the nets. All the local EOC's along with NWS monitor them.
