Ratchet straps are harmless to roto molded hulls. If it's a simple plastic hull, that's what I go for first. Fiberglass and carbon hulls need extra care, but they often have proper attachment points as well. (Epic at least)
Might want to slide apiece of rubber under the metal latches in the above picture so they don't dig into the hull. Often I use AC plumbing foam tubes on my straps to give them some squish.
I've never used a bow line. Scratches on my hood are worth more than your windshield, I guess. LOL. Those Yakima sideways racks are pretty handy and secure.
