Ok... time for a little update. I have had a few days to work on this thing, although not nearly as much as I would like. I have had a few other peoples Jeep projects keeping me busy, and had a big wrenchfest for other folks last weekend at my shop so they could use the facility/lift/tools etc.. Finally, I got a little more done on my own jeep.
Still quite a ways to go though. Lots more tubing left to install.
First up, this was my 5th fender trim (now dubbed the :"Stump Trim" by my NAXJA buddies) for a friend of mine. We did this on Friday, and I am doing another one tomorrow (Tuesday).
Just a before and after shot. The indention around the rear opening of the fender is where I had to grind away some bondo to get to the sheetmetal, and the owner opted not to re-fill it.
Before:
After: (Use your imagination for the other side) He is running 37" tires.
Also, I had a friend of mine bring over his fancy new machine for me to play with... VERY cool equipment here. He wants me to eventually weld his bumper for his dually, so he is letting me get the machine set-up and figured out. Its a Multiprocess unit made by Longevity and does (AC/DC) Tig, Stick, and also has a built in plasma cutter that can be set-up for CNC. Brought me all the goodies to go with it too, including the gas and consumables. Cant wait to play with this thing! (the owner may chime in here as well... hes on Expo)
On to my pile...
First thing I could do really before doing much cage work was to install the frame stiffeners, so that I could them install the sliders, so I could have something to tie the cage into.
I have owned the stiffeners for almost 5 years now. I vowed to not put them on until I had a two post lift in my shop... now I do.
Got the existing pseudo frame area ground down/cleaned up.
Decided to try some preventive maintenance with weldable primer since the area behind the stiffeners can and probably will trap moisture.
After the afore mentioned primer
Getting them lined up and tacked on.
Got them completely welded on... thats a LOT of rosette welds!
Next, it was time to install the sliders.
The B-Pillar tubing will run from the halo, down through the roof, into the cab behind the seat, and down through the flooring and land between these back two frame braces/slider mounts on another bar that will run front to back between the two.
I had these kickouts on my toyota and LOVED them. They really save your quarter panels from trees as it pushes your rear off of them.
Checking the view from the top.
Rear passenger door clearance to the top of the slider, bout 5/8". That'll do, especially when the cage gets all tied in.
Might as well paint it all while its on the lift.
Got the Halo painted as well:
Time to get this thing mounted on top of the Heep.
Got some more bars done...
Had to get creative on this side... didnt want to remove the snorkel, and also wanted to protect it. There will be more tube added here as well...
Time to start on the light bar mount fabrication and mounting. I made the actual bar about a year ago, and its been sitting on the shelf ever since. I really like the way the Baja/Jeep Speed style lights are usually mounted, so thats what I went with.
Lights are just sitting their for the time being. I wanted to see how they looked. They are Hella 4000's with HID conversions. Two Euro beams, and two pencil beams.
