suburban rear locker question

Hi,

Just a quick question. Does anyone have any thoughts on how a two wheel drive truck (suburban) with a rear locker, like arb, works in the snow?

Rather then getting a 4x4 I am trying to see if a 2x4 with a rear locker would meet my needs.

Thanks for any help u can give me :)

a locker is actually worse in the snow if there is any kind of sidehills. it will suck the back end downhill before u know it. but if your on flat roads not turning(youll spin out easily) with no sidehills it will work great. there really is no comparison between just being locked in the rear and having 4x4 when in the snow. also air down and youd be amazed how far you can take a non locked rig

I ran a powertraxs locker in the rear of my 1991 suburban for 3 years and zero issues with it in the snow. It worked so well that i wouldn't need to engage the 4x4 unless the snow got deep (a foot or more). I only once had an issue with it "side hilling" but i attribute that more to the type of tread (stupid pro comp extream terrain tires) Never was an issue with the mtr's or the km's. I think you would be fine.

Have you considered Tru-Trac Limited slip? I running it in the 10 bolt front of my K5. It is a cone style limited slip. No clutches to wear out. Much stonger then the factory limited slip.

My rear differential is Detriot locked. Ice is where you will really notice side hilling (even on crowned roads). It will also steer you some.

sasaholic is right. Airing down will do wonders. Even running open. I am amazed at what our stock Jeep WJ open diff'd and aired down will do.

I had a Detroit Locker on my last IHC Scout. On wet roads you quickly learn to back off the gas and roll through turns or you do a real quick lane change! I think an ARB air locker or one of the electric lockers would be a much better solution for a general use vehicle.
