Superwinch Winch-in-a-Bag?

Saw the press release on ExPo's home page. I like the idea because of the reduced weight and better flexibility over a mounted winch. It won't lift your rig straight up in the air but it could pull it through minor snags. I figure if I need to recover my truck after it's rolled off a cliff I will have bigger problems than an undersized winch. I was unable to find a price.

Guidelines say to get a winch that's rated for 1.5x the trail weight of your vehicle. I doubt this would be even remotely an effective winch for getting past trail obstacles unless you're using alot of block and tackle.

How does it attach to your vehicle? I assume you bolt a mounting plate to your bumper or frame somewhere? I like the idea of a removable winch but the only one's I've seen are the receiver-mount systems that Warn (I think) makes.

I have often thought of buying an ATV winch such as this one; http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_98249____SearchResults
and then, if needed, double the pulling power with a snatch block. I would set up the winch to fit either front or back using the receiver. It would not be the perfect solution but would give me winching power that I don't currently have for less money than a full size winch and mount or bumper.

I understand your point of anything is better than nothing but for the price of that winch at bass pro i'd get a cheaper fullsize winch like the smittybuilt or a gorilla winch. That way you'd know for sure you had enough pulling power and for about the same money as that atv winch.

... or a gorilla winch.

Don't know about these. A buddy of mine is a moderator on another forum. He was received one from that company to review and found it failed on the first attempt!:Wow1:

I know this could have been a one off exception but I wouldn't by one unless many others proved them to be reliable.

I watched a friend winch his loaded for two for the weekend Samurai Hardtop on 33's up Surprise Cyn with a Superwinch X2. It had no problem dragging him up those 7 falls. I'm pretty sure that he was well over 3000 lbs gross weight.

I think that the 1.5X rule is more of a general guideline than something hard and fast. If you're in mud country 1.5X may not be enough. If you're in the desert and just need a little extra help then 1.5X may be more than you need since sometimes an extra body or two pushing is all that it takes.

Exactly! You never know when you're going to need the winch or how much pull it'll take to free the vehicle. My thought is if you're spending that kind of money on a winch, why not get one that is on the oversized end of the spectrum? If you don't use it so what. It's when you need it and don't have it that can get expensive! One of my pet-peeves is when someone tells me I don't need one or when someone tells me my 9K is too big for my vehicle.

I think we could all recount a story of a bad winch nomatter what brand. My uncle just told me this past weekend to never ever buy any thing by mile marker. He had a bad issue with his. I don't have a problem with testing new equipment. I'd just rather test it before the trail. I'm not too sure on the specs of the SmittyBilt but i've heard good things. A inch bumper does cause an added expense for you. I was thinking you'd just get a winch plate to add to the bumper but that works for my Jeep probably not on your rig.

That winch bag is a great idea.. but the 2,000 lbs is scary to me. It would never work... our trailer weighs in at that.

What about running a Smittybilt and a multi mount or a 2" receiver mount?

We just put a new Smittybilt on Yosh's TJ. The rig barely see's dirt so i couldn't really justify a Warn. If and when we need to use it, im sure it will work fine.. just a tad slower than most winches. I've heard mixed reviews, but for $299.. i don't really care. The controller seems a tad cheesy, but the rest seems fine. Spooled it in and out and i didn't really notice the speed, but of course that wasn't under load. Also checked the paperwork and the box and i can't find out where it's made. All the bolts are MM and the weight has Kilo's, so that makes me think... not from here. All in all i think it comes down to how much you think you'll use it and in what circumstances. We have a Warn on the cruiser, but thats because we tend to use it much much more and we usually get into stickier situations with that vehicle.

Still not understanding how it attaches. Clicking on the link for the "manual" just takes you back to the Superwinch web site.

How it attaches: Attach strap to your recovery point on one end, and the winch body on the other. Attach winch line to your anchor. Connect wires and go.

The winch will probably get suspended in the air at some point.

Think of it more as a battery powered come-along than a winch.

That's really funny. I had been working on "designing" (designing = scribbling some rough sketches on notebook paper, trying to convince my girlfriend it was cool, and then forgetting all about it) something EXACTLY like that (with the exception of mine having a metal bowl underneath it to keep it out of the dirt before and after winching.
I guess it wasn't as dumb of an idea as I thought it was.
