Support Our Trooper! 97 Isuzu Trooper introduction

Hello All,

First off THANK YOU to the whole community, prior to purchase this forum has been an invaluable resource for determining what vehicle I finally ended up with.

Got myself a 97 Trooper Yesterday with 240,000km. I don't think its ever been washed, the interior is basically a 15 year old ashtray (however everything inside works, no rips, etc. just another victim of cigarettes) it has a VERY heavy steel front bumper with bull bars and 9000lb winch which is currently not mounted (the previous owner says the brackets he fab'd up failed when he was rescuing a jeep liberty that rolled itself over- but that is capable, according to him, of 'taking out trees and small boulders'... I'm just going to take his word for it. Roof Rack. 32" A/T's, he gave me 2 full sets (including spares) of tires and rims in ADDITION to the 32's already on the vehicle... what else... oh- it has a very capable sound system with new deck and 1970s household box speakers wired in place of the trunk speakers just flying around back there.

However, All jokes aside, the body (aside from the obvious bumper/grille issue) is free of any rust, dents, minimal pin striping, everything works all switches dials gauges lights signals doors windows etc. The guy was a heavy equipment mechanic and a tow truck driver and although some of the fixes are bushleague... they work. It was his daily and he said he wheeled the logging roads out his back door (picked it up in Sunshine Valley, BC for those who are familiar) almost every day as well. Its not pretty but its got insane potential and its all mine for 2k CAD. Talked him down from 3k eventually having to negotiate with his missus who apparently was the boss, guilt tripping them about smoking proved to be the most valuable negotiation tactic  ) Not bad, not bad.

Blasted around some logging roads on the test drive, ran strong, was surprised by the articulation in the suspension (has had work done to the front end to support that bumper, but otherwise is just on a 2" body lift) 4lo-4hi all worked well. On highway some noise from the tires and a bit wobbly in the rotor department but strong pull, smooth shifting, overdrive kicks in when it should etc. Made it the 2hrs back to Vancouver with no issue... well almost no issue...

There are some Gremlins, but I will start another thread for that conversation.

TL:DR; Happy to be here, I'm going to lean a lot on you guys over the coming months as up until now all of my mechanical experience has been limited to 2-wheeled machines.

Nice to see Yet another Isuzu Trooper join the ranks Planet Isuzu is a great place to find ZOO specific info. I have 2 that are great . my older one is a 88 trooper and I love it . lots of miles to go before i declare it toast. I live up the big hills in Merritt and I get around lots in mine, Its pretty stock but i've been dumping TLC and a few goodies. These have proven to be pretty good on and off road. While I'm no luddite i do like the older one i have because of the lack of electrics on it . in the future my EFI will be stripped off and a Carb will be replaced along with swapping the auto trans for a stick but thats me . Good luck let me know if your in the area i can show you track trails lakes etc

Good luck

Thanks! Yeah I've made a similar post on ZOO, hoping that they can't help me with some more of the model specific questions and Electronic Gremlins. Let me know how your transmission swap goes - Im already dreading this 4L30E... I mean, the filler hole is parallel to the ground... that right there should be enough of a sign of whats to come. Anyway hope it doesn't let me down *knocks on wood*. As for getting around I will totally take you up on that if I'm in the Merrit area. Really nice up there. BC Backroads Map Book is a good start but any local info is obviously very welcome!

Also need to find a good shop in Vancouver to fab up some brackets for my roof rack and front bumper. Anyone out there have any recommendations? pretty simple steel work for the bumper brackets and the roof rack mounting plates should be just some simple bent sheet metal.

I hate to say i do most of my own fab work i do the brutal system of IT WORKS . But I will be doing some fancier stuff later after i visit my brother in edmonton... he works at a sheet metal place so i get free material as his boss likes me and i only take what he considers scrap. he looses a few dollars when he sends the scrap bins but he likes im a veteran and hes thinks hes doing a community type service .. I like it ive made a few fancy things like a large smoker a stainless steel BBQ . he liked the design of it he had me make him one and draw up plans so he can make them(His company really) for sale if you send me some sketch with dimensions i could fab the brackets for you i always recommended 3/16 steel as a start point for the install bracket heres what i have now

i want to do this see below to it and when i do ill get rid of the stock bumper and pull the winch all the way back to the body so i can increase my angle of attack then start fabbing i plan on building it out of 1/8" and using my wire feed to weld it . I also have to build a winch mount and wire it fr the rear as i want to put a 4.500# winch in the back.

Nice to see yet another trooper! I hope it goes well for you. I just bought mine a few weeks ago!

Did a bunch of general upkeep on it and have it pretty much where I want it.

What rack is on top of yours?
