Mishaps on the trip:
Surprisingly little. Got stranded/lucky at a rest area just west of North Platte, Nebraska. Was pulling over for a potty break and maybe a 30 minute nap anyways. Parked, and noticed a huge cloud of smoke and burning oil smell coming from the hood. Shut the truck off, checked the oil level, dipstick was dry. Oil all over the engine bay, and had sprayed heavily enough to be dripping from my rear bumper. It was dark and cold, so i figured i'd wait it out til morning when i could see. That wasn't too fun either. 6 hours in the truck rubbing my feet together to try to fend off frostbite. (I was successful, so that's good.)
In the morning, i tried to figure out what my plan of attack would be. My friend from home said he'd be willing to come out and get me and tow me home. (At this point, i figured the motor was dead.) I decided i would start dumping my spare oil in in hopes i could see it come up on the fill line first. After 1.5qts, it was showing full, so the good news is that i only lost 1.5qts. The bad news is i didn't know in how many miles. The maximum was 94.2 miles. (last time i checked and still was slightly overfull.) Started the truck, sounded fine. Went back to the engine bay, and oil is POURING out of the filter. It was merely loose.
Couldn't get it as tight as i wanted, turns out it had the wrong oil filter on it, so that wasn't something i was super happy about. Limped it 18 miles into town and paid Firestone $30 to change the oil. Rest of the trip went ok besides overcooling in really cold weather. Need to do something about that, it's killing gas mileage and making the heat crappy.
Averaged 16.2mpg for the entire trip, including at least 3 fill ups of awful gas mileage due to overcooling issue. Truck is also throwing a CEL that i'm guessing is making it run rich.
