Saw this guy parked out in front of my apartment here in Chicago.
How is that thing legal to run in the states w/o US plates?
Aren't you allowed to visit a country with an otherwise un-importable vehicle with the right paperwork, visas, etc. so long as you don't sell it / take up residency?
It looks like it has a spacer on the roof too.
For extra head room or does it open up??
12 months actually. I had my Defender in the US for 12 months prior to moving to here.Yup-for up to 6 mos with the right paperwork.
It is a pop-up roof. Extec takes the original roof carefully off (no problem with the Defender as all those panels are riveted) fits a sub-frame in and then uses the original roof again for the pop-up. Clever design, in and out. Latest development that they offer a pop-up roof with hard sidewalls. It looks like it has a spacer on the roof too.

Dormobils fits a fiberglass top on the Defender, that opens to the side. Extec's roof is an all-aluminum construction and is attached in the front and lifts in the rear. I was always a big fan of Extec and their workmanship.Dormmobile, I believe.
