Tablet controlled lights

I am making a relay board that is controlled by Android devices via bluetooth. I have a prototype working now. I have created an app that has a graphical switch bank that can control the relays over a bluetooth link. My purpose is for controlling lighting that i am adding to my vehicle: Fender well lights for putting chains on in the snow when dark, Side mounted lights for lighting area around vehicle for setting up camp, off road lights. You get the picture. These relays can be used to turn on and off anything that you would with a regular switch. The advantage is that you can consolidate the controls to the tablet and not pepper the dash with switches AND remotely turn lights on and off. The app works on my phone and my tablet. I am wondering if this may be something that others may be interested in and if it would be worth turning into a product. Do any of you have any interest in adding something like this to your rig? Or is this just something I like?

If you could make it controllable from other bluetooth devices (laptops, Apple products, etc.) that'd be even cooler. But even if it's android-exclusive, it sounds sweet.

So far I am operating Android so that is what i have going. I would think that making a IOS version would be simple enough but I have no experience with that. I would be contacting a software engineer I know and see if he could make it cross platform since i am not a programmer.

Good that you enjoy that type of tinkering. Too much technology for me. I'll stick with good old switches.

I can't even get interested in using a tablet for nav, let alone lighting control. Technology is cool, but the thing I enjoy most about going on an adventure is turning OFF all the crap I have to use for work. Again, cool concept, but definitely not for me...

In princpal a good idea and definetly fancy.
ISISpower.com has something simular already for the multiplex system.
Keep us posted how you proceed.

You'll shoot your eye out, kid!!

Seriously, sounds intriguing, but what happens when you drop the tablet in the (snow/mud/dirt/outhouse) and can't find it?

I have thought about having a traditional switch input to use if the tablet gets dunked or breaks. This would be fairly easy to do. If you have priority circuits that need redundancy it could provide that extra reliability. I understand those that don't care for the extra tech, its not for everyone. I am going to be building this out soon and will try to take some video of it in the vehicle.

Sweet.

I took a look at the isis power system. I think they have some great stuff. However I don't like the idea of my vehicles core wiring system being multiplexed because the vehicle is now a oddball. What I am doing is a similar idea only you leave the stock wiring alone. No special parts needed for the core vehicle functions. Also what i am doing is much more simple and therefore cheaper. That isis stuff isn't cheap :Wow1:

The feniex was the first time I had seen something like this. I work as a communications tech and part of our job is building cop cars and fire pickups and suv's. I think this is what got me started on the idea. It is intended for cops but Function wise it is very close to what I want to do. Seems like a nice setup. What I am doing is getting hardware to work with android devices. This can lower the cost because you can use what you already have (many people are using android smart phones now or have android tablets) and I would like to get it to work on IOS as well.
