Taco in the water (snorkel)

Hey guys,

How sea worthy is a taco? I'd like to get a snorkel, but in reality, if I got water over the hood, wouldn't a myriad of electrical devices under the hood short out?

I'm sure you guys have practical experience with this.

Thanks!

As you can see, there are a lot of differing opinions.

For your specific truck, I would be concerned for with water and the supercharger. Cold water on a hot supercharger isn't a good idea.

The Taco sucks as soon as you no longer can see the beach. Seems to sink like a rock in heavy wave... I would suggest a boat for the sea.

thanks. I get the joke. Was just wondering why you see so many snorkles. The mindless lemming in me saw one for the first time on the dante's peak suburban and had to have one. The engineer in me thinks its probably pointless on a taco... Just wondering if I was missing anything.

Good luck! I think most of the snorkels here are not for the water, but for the dust at least that is my opinion from my neck of the woods.

A snorkle is essential for dusty conditions, trust me i know, Australia is a giant dust bowl:hehe: that's one reason we drink lots of beer too:beer: a mans not a camel yaknow:elkgrin:

Anyway the snorkle with the pre cleaner for really dusty conditions is good.

Also having this spinning intake at the top is good for the dust rather than the ram intake.

Just more options to look at.

Baz, I have never seen a pre-cleaner like that before. Would you happen to have any more details on it?

This is made by Unifilter/Finafilter, should be available online, they have only been around a short time, a friend of mine uses one in his D90.

Here is the link to Uni-Filter

Can anybody explain the physics behind how the spinning intake prevents dust? Sounds like a novel concept, but I don't understand it. Does it significantly restrict airflow?

As air is pulled upwards and into the cylonic intake it has angled fins making the air go around in circles. Dust and dirt are the heavier particles and thus like a cetrifuge `throw' the dust to the edges where it is collected vs the clean air that is sucked down the middle into the engine.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centrifuge

I think its pretty simple really,
The can on top keeps the dust in a chamber where the heavy particles collect, you empty it occasionally. Kinda like the fording kit does on a USMC Hummer or the air filters commonly seen on Catarpillar heavy equipment.
Make sense?

yeah the snorkel is good for dusty conditions but there are some times that u need it. me and my dad are take my 90 toy and his 01 taco up to run the oregon back coutry trail and we have to do some water crosings and some previous runners have gone with out snorkels and had to be towed out by the FJ-40.

Snorkels do let you go a little bit deeper aslong as you dont stay in the water and your just crossing through. The two TJ's that went without snorkels got stuck then they came back with there tacos with snorkels and went all the way. so as u can see snorkels help alitle bit. but mainly used for dust.

Does any one if those pre cleaners work on the safari snorkel for the 90 P/U and 01 Taco?

you can see the 90 toy and 01 taco at the fallowing site.

I'm not sure, but I intend to find out soon. A local club member bought a handful of them from Aus. a year or so ago, and we found out they don't fit the FJ40/60 or 80 as I recall. I'm going to measure the OD/ID of my Tacoma snorkel and see if its any different... Though as I recall SS only makes a single intake unit, so they are likely all the same size.
