Tacoma 4x4 with Flip-Pac camper: Cost estimate

In the Summer 2010 Overland Journal, there's an article about a well-equipped camper owned by forum member Tacodoc. The truck has many upgrades that make it more capable off-road. The camper is an Adventure Trailers Flip-Pac, tailored to meet Tacodoc's needs. The result is a go-anywhere adventure travel vehicle with enough creature comforts and conveniences to make a trip of several weeks a pleasure. And the truck just looks cool!

The OJ article has a list of the major components used to customize the vehicle. What's missing is how much the project cost to complete.

So I did a little searching online. My cost estimate to duplicate Tacodoc's vehicle today: $56,207.
The summary is below. The details appear at the end of this post.

Comments and corrections, please!

Some things can be had cheaper. I'm sure doc did some of the work himself. What you need to ask yourself is what would you need/want. Would it be a mirror of his rig? Hell I'd like to see a few of these running around in different colors.
I may be joining the flippac crowd one of these days.

All and all that isn't a bad price for that rig, especially compared to an Earthroamer Jeep conversion.

The first thing I would do different, would be to fire that $100/hr mechanic. $6000 buys an awful lot of fuel.:ylsmoke: All of those parts listed are pretty much
bolt on, a drunk half blind monkey could do that.

I would like to see an AT Flip Pac on an AEV Brute conversion, that would be a bad ******** rig in my book.

oooppps ! sorry to hijack this thread.

I don't want to do that.

I can pull this down if you guys don't want it on here.

But I got excited when they were talking about the Brute conversion and wanted to share the possibilities.

The AT Flip-Pacs are a sweet set up and I would also love to see one mounted on a Brute.

I have a soft spot for the Flip-Pac products since the Flip-Pacs were kinda / sorta / somehow part of our Sister Company Six-Pac many years ago.

When we were little my dad has a Golden Eagle CJ-7 Jeep and would take us all over the Sonoma County mountains & fire trails.

Here is a teaser too !

:)

I'm not a "Jeeper", but I love this set up.

I am not a Jeeper either, this is something about that Brute kit.

That FWC is cool too! Would be great if it was color coordinate. I was reading on the AEV site that it was the plan but ran out of time?

Would be cool if this was an AEV kit too.

Where did you find this, and what is it? It kinda looks lime a J10 but more modern?

Thanks for the kind words gents. I hope my wife doesnt see that estimate ;)

Most of the numbers are pretty close, but the labor and hours are WAY off. All of the work has been done by myself with the exception of some fab work. The bumpers, winch, lights, gears, electrics, sound, camper interior, etc were all done at home over the last few years.

I have 60 hours of labor into that FlipPac interior alone! :ylsmoke:

The problem with the Brute kit ($9000) is that you can't stop there!
There's big suspension and tires, axle upgrades (how about portals?),
the highline fender and heat extractor hood, the Hemi or diesel, new
bumpers, and so on.

I think it's more practical to start with the J8 MILSPEC diesel two door,
estimated cost $60,000. Then make the Brute cab fit, and add the camper
of your choice. Figure maybe $75,000.

A less expensive option is the Flip-Pac that Adventure Trailers is designing
to fit the Jeep JK. Just buy a Rubicon model, put the AT Jeep Flip-Pac on top,
and you're out the door.

I didn't say it would be cheap...:ylsmoke::elkgrin:

It would be cool

Your idea of the J8 as the platform is a better option.

Those guys aren't going to be able to build those camper tops fast enough.

I never been a "Jeep" guy, that would get me to switch brands. It would be America's answer to the Toyota LC70 camper.

I am buying a new vehicle here in a couple months, I am torn between a Tacoma and the JK 4 door, waiting to see what the Flip Pac for the JK is going to be like.

HMMM cost

Yeah the Brute could cost that much but if you compare buying a new Jeep Rubicon at $35,000

donor jeep 6,000
brute kit 10,000
Wheels and suspension 7,000
Highline kit 2,000
Hemi kit 5,200
crate motor 6,000

Total 36,000 ish ( these numbers are rough don't cut yourself )

Just throwing out some numbers but you could have a super bad *** Brute and the ulitmate winter project for the same price as a loaded 4dr Jeep.
