Stock Tacoma performed well going up to one of the white mountain research station facilities near Bishop, CA. Tires (Toyo M55) were amazing.

I did notice the lack of power at altitude with the 4cyl. I spent 40 miles in 4lo 1st or 2nd gear.

And be assured, you have plenty of power to keep going higher if you're ever of the mind.

NOTE: This is not an invitation to Californians to all pack up and move to Colorado :D .

I was going to say the same thing... But yes, they'll keep going up even further just fine.

You used to be able to drive to the top of Mt. Bross (14,000ft and change). I think now you can drive all but the very last 200 ft or so of elevation. I was surprised how my dirtbike can run well at any elevation between 5,000-14,000 with the same jetting.

Pulling a trailer at that altitude bogs down quite a bit though.

A portion of that road is publicly accessible, I took silver canyon trail just east of bishop on the white mountain.

It's good to know they just keep going =)

The public road ends at a locked gate two miles short of the research station at 11,300 ft. Highest camping spot I've found anywhere in California (I do a lot of acclimation camping/hiking for Sierra peak bagging). Silver Canyon Rd is a wonderfully tight and steep way to get up there, way more interesting driving than the long way around through the bristlecone forest.

Peak Bagging defined

Ok, what exactly is "peak bagging" in layman's terms?

Peak baggers have a mild obsession with collecting as many summit victories over significant named peaks as possible. They'll hike often and quickly usually sacrificing comfort for time saved.

Frank: Hey Bob, Let's do this loop trail and we can bag 6 peaks on one hike!
Bob: It's 20 miles of trail!
Frank: We can do it!
Bob: Got to love Peak Bagging!

Thanks for sharing pics of the reserach station. :) I was up there a few weeks ago, stayed two days and two nights. Came in on Wyman Creek road and camped at 10,800'. Visited both groves of Ancient Great Basin Bristle cone pine trees before descending Silver Canyon rd.

Thanks for the explanation, sorry for the thread jack.
Nice pic, by the way.
