Amazing photos as usual Ben, great to meet you guys on the road! Hope to see you again soon. Were posting up here in San Pedro La Laguna on Lago Atitlan, Guatemala. Found a great Mayan family that runs a small spanish school in town, $25 a week for a cabin, $2 for a giant bag of grocery, and $1 for a 40oz of beer. Life is good!

Looking forward to seeing Copper Canyon posts

A quick update of where we are in real time! I have many more ruins to post up soon. We are now in Oaxaca, Mexico and have spent the last few nights in the small quite village of Mital. It has a set of old sacred ruins that date from 900 B.C. to about 900 A.D. In the 16th century the spaniards cut blocks and destroyed part of the ruins to build the cathedral that is still in use today. I have more images that I will post later, but for now all of these are from my iPhone so take it easy on the quality!
the important part of this story besides the ruins is the family that we met there. We started our journey late morning from San Cristobal de la Casas and had no hope of making it to Oaxaca by nightfall. We disobeyed our number one rule and drove way after dark. The highway became very steep and windy about 4:30 pm and at that time we heard what we thought was a rock in our right rear tire? We kept driving and the sound seemed to have gone away as it usually does with the BFG All Terrains. Generally we just throw the rock and all is good. As night fell we started to meet a lot of large semi's and buses in the mountains and passing became and issue. This is one time that I was very glad that I had my sweet IPF Lights from ARB. I used them to drive with confidence through the mountains and skirt big rigs.
Once we saw that it was getting dangerous we made it to the town of Mitla and started looking for a camp in town. There was no boon docking and camping at a restaurant was right on the road, so no go for us! We headed for the ruins in centro and thought we would try to camp in the parking lot. As we approached the ruins which now have a large 16th century cathedral parked right on them we said hello to a small dark older man. After about 10 minutes of talking to Alberto he invited us to stay in one of his rooms. We met his lovely wife and one of his sons who was anxious to learn of our travels south. Beverly and I thought it was a great time to break out the bottle of Knob Creek we had been saving. After retrieving it from the land cruiser we introduced Alberto to bourbon whiskey and he returned the favor by offering mescal? After a few drinks the friendly couple took all of us out to the best taco stand in town and we munched on some really great spicy pork offerings that were delicious.
All in all this was the best two day stay with a family that we could ever dreamed of! We will return one day soon.

The next morning this was a complete surprise to us! We knew we were close to the ruins, but.......

Remember that clicking rock like noise I talked about? First flat ever on BFG All Terrains and I have tons of miles on many sets.

The families' home that we stayed at and now call "Casa De Ruinas!"

Shot last night at dusk with my iPhone...... Love the cactus fencing.

Carwash-02.jpg

Found a great carwash and stayed to talk with the family for hours after they were finished putting some love on Lucy. On a side note the mother wanted to by my land cruiser and was somewhat serious!

Congrats on getting married soon in Tulum! We are paying about 10.6 pesos per litre for premium and verde is about one peso less.

I'm loving this! Wish I was with you. Great pictures! Neat to run across James and Lauren while you are down there. Who knows before long maybe you'll run across Brenton and Shannon rolling around in there old 4Runner as well.
Our ears are burning!

We'd love to bump into Paul, Beverly, and Ben on our way South. I'm not so sure it will materialize though...our recent detour has delayed any border crossings for at least a few weeks (although we're a stone's throw from Canada :smiley_drive:).

For now, we're enjoying the pictures, dreaming of cheap cervezas, and warmer climates!

Ben, Beverly, Paul - we're enjoying your updates and photos. You even make iPhone photos look great! It's great you've been able to connect with locals. Look forward to hearing/seeing more about your travels. Are you enjoying the mainland better than Baja?

Awesome Trip Report.

The Ruins of Tulum have been on my list forever. They Yucatan is the one part of Mexico I have yet to visit. The pics are awesome.

Nice the see the Cactus fence still there in Mitla. Both times I was there I got a shot of me and the vehicle in front of it.

Your trip is inspiring and brings back a lot of great memories I have of Mexico.
