We also did not feel comfortable with our stock mattress.
My first mod was to take it to my upholsterer and have him glue on 2.5" memory foam. That made the mattress 4.5" thick and we slept like babies.
only problem with that was that it was too thick and we could barely close the damn thing, let alone leave our sleeping bags inside.
I pulled that out and gave it away and had my upholsterer make a new mattress out of high density foam. 2" thick like before but actual good quality foam that you wont sink you knee or elbow through.
Try adding a 1" topper, that will help but the best is to actually get some high quality foam and make a new mattress.
