The 2nd Gen Redemption by _ExpeditionMan

The Beginning

I started getting interested in overlanding about 3 years ago while still in college. I stumbled upon Expedition Portal and starting reading through Stioc's excellent Nissan R50 build thread. This thread was especially inspiring to me as it showcased a man building a vehicle he loved regardless of aftermarket support or stock capabilities, which is something we can all respect and certainly applies to me now. After getting a job and finally having the cash to purchase a vehicle I started looking around. I had settled on a clean first gen trooper (rare), a maintained Series 1 Discovery with a 5spd (unicorn), or a clean reasonably priced 1st gen 4runner with a 22re and a 5spd (rainbow unicorn). So as I was scrolling through craigslist hoping to win the lottery I stumbled on an ad for a 1994 4runner SR5 3.0 5spd with 178k. I had dismissed the 2nd gen 4runners as the black sheep of the otherwise studly Toyota truck family, but there was something about the simple straight edge styling and 4 door practically that struck home. So after talking with the owner (who was incredibly upstanding and honest) and reviewing all of his service records I caught a red eye flight to Albuquerque, New Mexico to pick her up. My Mom even tagged along to keep me company on the drive back! The truck was in really good shape and had a ton of work done to it, including the head gaskets, and drove better than any other car I had owned. So I bought her and made the drive back to Southeast Texas with no issues and even averaged 20.1 mpg. As an added bonus on the way home I got a chance to explore a few dirt roads in the hill country which let me drop it into 4wd for the first time. Man it feels great to finally have a truck and to be able to contribute to this awesome community!

The Goal

This will be an occasional DD along with my overlanding vehicle so all modifications will have to be practical, sorry no SAS here! I hope you enjoy the journey as turn this 4Runner into a capable, reliable, and comfortable platform from which myself and others can escape the daily grind to spend time outdoors. More to follow..

Sounds like it was a good truck for you. Hopefully mine lasts close to that long!

Clean rig!

Thanks, she's a survivor.

Nice looking rig! I've always liked that generation of 4Runner. When done up well they can be absolutely awesome.

I agree with you. I really like how clean and old school the styling is. Just enough of a difference between it and the third gen to make it special.

Nice find! That was my dream truck when I was 16. I remember those graphics by the rear windows making my head spin.

If it has a hitch receiver in back, then you already have a rear recovery point.

Thanks and seriously those graphics are my favorite part. Also sadly no hitch. I am really struggling between getting one installed and calling it a day or shopping for rear bumpers. Congrats on finding a clever way to get the camper off your first gen.

Thanks--I'm really having fun with it, in its light-weight configuration.

They must have consulted with psychologists when they designed those graphics!

Hitch receivers are relatively easy to self-install (some are quite easy). I sort of integrated a bumper onto a hitch receiver with some side plates and a piece of L-channel.

one of my favorite builds ever was a 1994 4Runner that I built almost 15 years ago. Still my favorite interior of any gen 4Runner. You have a great foundation there!

I may have to do that. I would love a rear tire carrier bumper but the options for 2nd gen 4runners are really thin...

I love the simple interior. Nothing inside rattles which is pretty crazy to me.

Looks great. I have a 4th Gen now, but I can' remember dreaming of getting a 2nd Gen as a kid. Subscribed.

Thanks MightyP! I've always liked those 4th Gens, if only they came in a manual.. Thanks for subscribing, I am preparing for some updates later this week.

nice score. Ive been considering a 2nd gen Runner for my next trail/expedition rig. Current one is a 86 Yota pickup Ive had 12 years now. On the 2" lift par, I did a ball joint spacer lift on my front from Suspension Connection. Wife got it for me last Christmas off amazon, was like $80 I think. Could work for your runner, front suspension is the same as 2nd and 3rd gen trucks, but the rear being coil spring, could do a 2" coil spacer or 2" lifted coil springs, not sure if any of the LC 100 coils would work.

Using LC 80 coils is actually a fairly common "junkyard" mod from what I have read on other forums, nets you ~3". As much as I would love a slight lift and larger tires I really like the stance of it now, plus it rides so well. Though, when I do finally break, I will probably go with ball joint spacers in the front exactly like you mentioned. Maybe one day I will stumble on an ARB bumper and have to get uprated torsion bars as well.

So I've got some parts in the mail currently and am waiting until I get some time off the week of Christmas to put together a big update! In the meantime if anyone is in the central Texas area I'm putting together a group to go to Hidden Falls on December 19th. Here's a link to a post here on expedition portal.
