Good show! Hope that 2.6 gives him some years of service.

I hope so too. That was yours originally, right? Appreciate it, man.

Not sure what Dan is up to, but he won't be here until next week sometime, so that gives a bit of time to try to get some more trucks on the road.

Next up for the 14'ers is to figure out why Jorge's 86 doesn't spark. We traded out the ECU but still nothing. Neither ECU looked like it had leaks on the board (they're much less complex than the later model's boards), so I'll have to dive into the, wait for it...FSM.

Try swapping the coil pack if you have a known good one laying around. Otherwise my guess would lean towards the whole distributor needing to be replaced.

We'll see about giving up. Haven't yet but I'm close. Maybe I'll buy a jeep.... Just heard Sedona is covered in ice so warmer wheeling and camping might be a better option for my womenfolk.

We fortunately have a "spare" sitting in the driveway for all that, since the 85 and 86 manual 2.6's share all those parts. His 86 has been nothing short of trouble for a long time.

Dan, warmer (to some "degree") weather is in store for us in the days ahead. But the plug has been pulled on summer here for sure.

Hopefully the 87 of mine, entrusted to the capable hands of the IncX/Toasty-AdvDrvn Crew is going to move out of their way soon. I obtained what the dealer believes are the banjo bolt washers for the oil cooler lines, ordered 2" and 1.75" silicone hose to connect the turbo and intercooler lines and also ordered 2" fuel filler hose to replace the rotted out original. Once those arrive, and not a minute later, I'll get those out to the compound and we'll attempt to move it under its own power. At least get it out of their sight, which I'm sure will be a welcome sign of progress.

I'm getting the feeling it will be a bigger day for them. More of a P.I.T.A. for those guys than it is a cheerful thing for me.

Sorry to say it but I'm not going to make my run to Az next week. The bearings in the rear diff are howling. It's going to be an expensive fix. Machine shops are quoting btwn $500 & $1000 to swap the bearings and set up the gears if I bring them the diff. The bearings and thrust washers are around $500. To make matters worse it's a two week process to order the parts and get them installed. Last time I tried to meet up with the crew in Moab my rear end blew up. Ugh.

Is it because I didn't call you back? I fell asleep and I can't remember overnight mostly.

I saw you called me this afternoon while I was scrunched up behind somebody's dryer and I forgot to call you back...sorry. We'll be here for next time, Mongo.

Meanwhile, back at the Ranch, all parts have arrived for the '87 work I hope to attempt Saturday, pre-Gaffigan (Toasty's weekend fun). The gas tank filler hose looks like no-fun-at-all to install; it's really heavy duty stuff.

Just shake it down real good for the next Sierra Challenge. Also we need a Sierra Challenge thread. PA_JERO?

Sometimes I can't believe how lucky people can get. Jorge bought that 85 SWB for $400 with the previous owner saying how it mis-fired on #4 (it doesn't), with the driveshafts in the front seat, the transfer case unbolted from the transmission and separated an inch, the shifters sitting on the floor inside and several other parts laying around. Well, it runs and drives and none of that stuff is an issue. He had to buy a can of starting fluid, a few gallons of gas...and that's about it. Everything else, all minor, came from our stockpile. I'm committed to polishing one body section per day and I have done the hood, front D.S. fender and the D.S. door, just hitting it with polishing compound then wax, and the thing really does rival the same white color paint and finish level of my 95 SR. Wish my 2012 Camaro was holding up that way (it's NOT).

It blows oil out of the tailpipe in the form of a luxuriant cloud. Hopefully that's just valve stem seals. We have an extra non-jet-valve head with mechanical valve adjusters already disassembled and waiting for Jay Ayala to stop by tomorrow, all the way from Portland, to let us borrow his Lisle **********-em tool that takes the valve spring trapper-keeper things off and lets you put them back on somewhat easily so we can both get the experience and have the extra head ready in case our compression and/or leak-down test proves that the head is the issue. Should be fun, and if you're in the area, stop by, Jay's a great guy and has done a lot for the Montero community. After 5-ish is good.
