Also check the High Pressure Oil Pump.

On my 2001 7.3l E-350... the pump went on it... OIL EVERYWHERE!
The pump was around $2000.

Piet-all of your 7.3 parts can be souced through a Navistar dealer, Diamond International in your area. I paid $700 for a HP oil pump last year, so there is a huge difference. The partsman can get Ford spec parts, they just have to dig a little.

My mechanic pulled the engine and took the head off. #8 cylinder had a large score mark in the bore and the valves "looked" sunken into the head.

I decided to go with a used engine and gear box that we know the history of, is local, and has the same mileage roughly.

The transmission is a Ford rebuilt with a PTO. It has less than 500 miles on it, the engine runs strong. The previous owner rolled the truck and bought it back from the insurance company.

I'll keep you posted on the progress.

Before you put the motor from the roll over in, do your self a favor and have your mechanic pull the pan and look at the lower end. I say this because I have seen more than one roll over that ran for a wile with little oil and once the truck was put back together they lost con rods. Just my .02

Good to hear Martyn, sounds like it was the right move...

It is a major ***** to pull that oil pan... It's glued in place and you also can't pull the pan unless you remove the engine...

If you ever have a HPOP fail used is fine as they rarely fail.. If you do get a HPOP Adenaline, cheaper than new and way better, basically a juiced up factory one...

Thanks for you input.

I should be OK as the 7.3 uses the High Pressure Oil system to open the injectors and when it rolled it would have been starved of oil.

I asked the mechanic and he said the same thing, plus there is a fuel shut of that works in a roll over situation. He said he has seen what you described in other diesels, but it would be very rare in a 7.3. What do you think?

I know you have been really busy, but does it live?

I'll be getting it back today or tomorrow. The engine has sat for three years so the fuel left in the engine needed to be flushed and new treated diesel run through. The piston rings were sticking so the glow plugs had to be pulled and lubricant added to the cylinder head. Some tuning, but evidently it's now it's running like a top.

Great news! I hope it runs like a top for many years!
