The first and still the best.

That dude was delusional.

The W&G ball cap represents the company in its senescent, desperate stage. A sad end to the company that outfitted Teddy Roosevelt and Charles Lindbergh.

Huh? Duluth? Any relation to the company that makes the 'Bucket Boss' pocket system for 5-gal buckets? (Guess what I just happen to have sitting next to the computer.)

One and the same...they seem to be moving more towards clothes as of my last visit to the site this morning...

interesting to hear about the fire hose pants as that's exactly what I was looking at. Need some good, summer weight work pants...

A company called Lost Worlds makes stuff in the U.S. with the original W&G Bush Poplin, but it's scary expensive.

Here is a link to their version of the Hemingway Bush Jacket; http://www.lostworldsinc.com/Kilimanjaro_Safari_Jacket.htm

This company also makes clothing that looks very much like the W&G designs, also scary expensive.

In the absence of W&G, I've been buying these shirts.

(sigh) It seems like only yesterday I was coming back from San Francisco all excited: my favorite funky little clothing shop, Banana Republic, was opening it's SECOND STORE! Woohoo!

Ok, story time!
So my grandpa obviously knew the original A&F stores, not the stylish places we have now. Well he was never a big traveler, and NEVER a mall crawler, so he was unaware of the change when in his 70's (late 1990's) we managed to drag him to a mall. We are walking around when he spots the big sign, Abercrombie & Fitch. Thinking that they were back in business, and our being none the wiser, we waltz on in and my grandpa walks up to the cutest youngest girl in the place (you all know the type) and asks with much excitement and 100% seriousness, "where do you guys keep your guns!?" I thought the poor girl was going to faint, she had no idea what to say or do and started to panic when she realized every eye in the store was on her. My Dad and I laughed and explained to both the girl (who had no idea what A&F used to be) and my grandpa who was MOST confused with what was going on, the history and that A&F was no longer an outfitters.

Nice cargo pants, but $228?

Also I am not partial to buttons.
I would rather have a snap for the fly and also no buttons on any of the pockets.
Velcro is so much easier, especially for a rear wallet pocket.
With a button it would be difficult for me, and I would be fumbling in public with it, and I might be accused of scratching my hind end trying to open it ;)

On pockets that are used frequently, a Velcro closure will wear out before the useful life of the pant, however that is not the main concern. Velcro makes a loud noise when you open it. That may be a very small concern to most users, but it is huge to some. A spot and stalk hunter would never have a Velcro closure on anything that he might have to access during a stalk. Animals are very forgiving of some sounds, but totally foreign sounds like Velcro or metallic clinks end the hunt. Its funny that certain things, like spring-loaded retractor reels for range finders, are thought up by people who've never seen an animal outside of a zoo.

L.L.Bean is another old line sporting goods company that went over to the dark side and became nothing more than a yuppie clothing store in the '80's. As a kid in the '40's and '50's, I remember stopping there at 0200 - 0300 to pick up fishing gear on our way north to visit family. My Uncle, a hunting and fishing guide, always bought his clothes there. The Maine Guide label meant something back then. They had a program where they would rebuild their Maine Guide boot at the fraction of the cost of new ones. He always had several pairs so one was always being rebuilt. To their credit after hiding most of there real sporting goods in the bowels of the store, they have opened a separate building catering to hunters and fisherman.
