the "Hidden" GPS Mod

I have always hated portable GPS systems bc they require the mount to be on the windshield and so after my first one got stolen i have been looking to make it a little more hidden.

ok so i got the idea from dpodo's thread on putting the GPS into the sun visor (over on T4R.org).. well from what i found out, the 4th gen sun visors are made much better then the ones we have in the 3rd gens so i had to get sort of creative. The visor on the 3rd gens are only stuffed with foam and a piece of cardboard.

Well here are some pics of my process that ive done and its still being worked on so that the final product will look almost like factory. Well let me know wat u guys think...

Still missing the bordering frame to keep it held in and a flush perfect look... if i cant get it to work out then ill just stick with the mounting of picture #3.

My first thought was that this is a really cool idea.

However, I realized on second thought that it wouldn't work for us, because often the co-driver is fiddling with the GPSr while the driver is, um, driving. We have to have it center-mounted, and preferably removable.

However, the cool factor is definitely there, and I hope it works out well for you.

ya so some ppl asked that y dont i mount it on the passenger's side and well the only prob is if im driving alone... well i can say that i have it so that it is removable so if i needed i could have the passenger fiddle with it and hand it to me so i can put it back into its place.

I primarily did this since my first one got stolen so i just figured this is a better theft deterrent and well the visor isnt really in the way of the view and i can hear the voice directions with the visor flipped up which is a plus. I also like that i have it running to the cig lighter and the fact that when the car is on the system turns on and when the car is off the system auto turns off.

I mounted it to test it out and like it so far and ill get pics up tom of it mounted and wil hopefully have the final product done by this weekend.

That looks like a great idea.

I fitted my Garmin above my rear view mirror, so it'd be out of sight to someone having a casual look in. It's not completely hidden like your instal, but it does the job.

And the passenger can fiddle whilst i'm driving.

These are nice designs, I like how they make it more like a factory installation and hide it from curious eyes.

The only thing that I don't like about them is that with them mounted up very high. Like that, you have to take your eyes off the road more than with a windshield mount which keeps the driver looking straight forward so that they keep the road in their peripheral vision.

To you guys that mounted them, do you experience that?

ok so i typically mount mine on the windshield by the side rear view mirror but i dont think that it is that high in my new location. i tested it and its actually pretty visible without having to really look away from the road that much.

ok so i ended up testing my spliced wire and it worked this time and so i finished up the install and well hope u guys like the final product for now... might make some few changes but im really happy with how it is now.
