The "Lunker"

This boat came into the cove in front of my house in Erendira last night. It has been for the last 3 years moored offshore and I was quite surprised yesterday when the captain hadn´t moved it to Ensenada. Around 3 p.m. yesterday I mentioned to my guests that I had seen the boat weather larger waves but watching the kind of pounding it was taking I told them that I had a strong feeling it would break loose sometime later. I came out of my house around 6:30 pm and saw a radio antenna through the darkness and there she was. Sad sight.

What's it take to get something like that back in the water, I wonder?

There is a ship salavge company that sometimes comes into my work for parts. They told me that it costs more for someone to dispose of a destroyed ship than to salvage it from the beach. Truly a sad sight. A little better attention paid by the owner would prevent so much trouble! Just like our cars i guess...

Erendira? When is the Expo meet and greet at your place going to be? I use to surf Cabras and stay in Erendira for the races, sweet place.

This ships not destroyed yet, if the owner has not been around for a while you might have a good find on your hands. How high is high tide?

At about 7am pst I took the attached 2 photos. The boat has been stripped of its diesel engine and all electronics that last couple of days. Anything of value has been salvaged and an early high tide with strong surf broke the back of the "Lunker".

Broken indeed. For some reason I had assumed it was a steel hulled vessel, obviously not.

I would assume the owner can be tracked down and is responsible for removing the rest of the boat? Was the hull damaged when it came ashore or did someone else just strip it in the opportunity? I have a friend that has sunk two large house boats in deep water in Lake Powell and has had to have both pulled up and removed.

Things like this are different in Baja. An act of nature. Since the boat is wood I am sure the next large swell with a high tide will wash it out to sea. The boat has been stripped and the hull was damaged extensively when it came ashore as the cove is all volcanic rock. There was no chance the Lunker could be saved. The surf was huge and no way any boat rescue could have been made
