The new Goodyear MT/R

Over the past few years that I have been wheeling my XJ I have had a few different sets of wheels and tires on it. I started out with some dean mud terrains that were slightly used, about a year later I upgraded to a almost new set of BFG MT KM's (old style) and used those for 8 months or so. After that I decided that 33's weren't going to cut it for me anymore so I decided to grab some 35 inch KM2's and Trail Ready beadlocks:

Those worked great, I only killed one tire and used them 2-3 weekends a month for almost 7 months. This fall I added a built narrowed HP44 to replace the stockish dana 30 that was under my jeep at the time, well this changed my wheel bolt pattern so I needed new wheels and tires. Luckily my buddy decided that Trail Ready's weren't bling enough for him anymore and switched to some Allied Racelines. I was able to get a new set of MT/R's and slightly used Trail Ready's for a great price:

I went wheeling with some local XJ's guys for the first time on new tires, axle, hydro assist and some other goodies and man was I impressed. The new MT/R from Goodyear is the best tire that I have used so far, they blow the BFG's out of the water and I am very glad that I switched. This video is of a obstacle at Walker Valley ORV park in Mt. Vernon Washington. It's called the Expressway Trail Rock Face, and many a rigs have rolled on it. I barely had to get on the gas to get my tires to grip and climb up the rock, remember that all of this is wet, covered with sand and mud, and very very slick.

Here is a buddy of mine almost rolling in the same spot last year:

Thanks for the post. I've probably got another year or so on my KM2s and have been trying to figure out if I should do those again or give the GYs a shot.

Thanks for the post, Alex. Those new MT/Rs have gotten a lot of rave reviews and when Matt did his review in JPFreek, he had traveled in all sorts of terrain beforehand and give them a big thumbs up. I've really like my Cooper Discoverer STT tires but who knows, may give those new MT/Rs a try at some point.

I have zero complaints about my MT/Rs. I love them them and they have seen deep snow, thick mud, and big rocks. Great tires.

I have heard good things about the Cooper as well, one of my friends runs them and they seem to do very well in the sloppy PNW terrain.

I just ordered the new Good Year Dura Trac's, well see how they do, suppose to get snow, ice and a trip wheeling this weekend. Should give me a good overall feel for them. They will be here on Tuesday .

Do they make MTR's in 33x10.50?

Goodyear's site does not show a 33x10.5

Do they make allot of noise @ highway speeds?

They do not make a ton of noise for an aggressive off road tire, but more noise than any AT out there.

The Duratrac's are supposed to be a really, really great tire, especially for those that don't need the more aggressive tread pattern of the MT/R.

I agree with both these statements; they are louder then my KM2's but still tolerable. As far as the Duratrac's go, I have seen them in the sloppy NW a few times and they seem to hold their own very well for an A/T.

Several things-

1) You're welcome for spotting you so perfectly up that line Alex. ;)

2) Here's a video of me doing it a couple years ago. Note the amount of wheelspin compared to Alex's run. I was running brand new 35" Interco TrXus M/Ts at the time:

3) In two weeks I'll be at the 1 year mark with my 37x12.50R17 MT/Rs and still have nothing but good things to say about them. Next week I'll be at Johnson Valley for 9 days really pushing them to the limits as a recovery vehicle during the King of the Hammers race.
