I have one of these --> link

It's super well built, packs thin and fits the width of the Gen 2/2.5 roof perfectly. It has held up to some very high winds, rain, cold and hot temps, and always sleeps very comfortably.

those are very nice.
the top pic looks like alaska or northern nevada
the bottom ; sierra nevadas. am i even close?

Good eye! Top pic is along the Dalton Highway above the Arctic Circle. The lower pic is from Glacier National Park in Montana.

On that trip I was travelling with 2 other guys, three of us total. We rotated two sleeping in the tent and one on a sleeping platform inside the Montero. Everyone preferred being in the tent.

I had a TuffStuff on my old '92 for a couple years. Great tent, but decided a trailer would be better for us. Reasonably priced, My opinion is to get one with an enclosed lower, and basically they are all made in China, so find the best deal on one and go with it..92_rtt.jpg

I currently have a CVT, previously I had a Mombasa, I like both, but I would say the CVT does seem to be a small step up in overall quality.

trailer

We have a CVT Denali Ext...but on a trailer we pull behind us. I've found that I get better gas mileage pulling a loaded off-road trailer than I did when traveling with a loaded roof rack, even though the trailer is carrying way more gear than I'd ever have risked putting up top. Bought the CVT second hand, and the only issue we've had with ours is the zipper for the annex breaking. It'd be nice if they had metal zippers...

Man that looks good! Do you know about how many mpg you lost with it on top?

I'm in the process of building out my first Montero. One of those custom items yet to be fabricated is a full-length roof rack. I have a CVT Mt. Shasta Extended Pioneer that was installed on our Jeep. Once the rack is completed for the Montero, then I'll get the RTT mounted.

It's not an apples to apples comparison since we were using a different tent with the roof rack setup (an HEO Glasgow Ground Tent, similar to the OZ RV-3 or RV-5), but in going from 13 to 13.5 mpg I figure the trailer will pay for itself right before the aluminum it's made from dissolves back into the earth through natural decomposition.
