Thats great - I use to use a big Nikon but find my I can keep my little Nikon handy in my shirt pocket for those unexpected great shots.

the story is entertaining but I am not sure I understand why this picture is so amazing technically.

can someone explain? it is the lighting effect created by the fog?

Nice story. :26_7_2:
My first thought about the photo was also "ho-hum," but on reflection I have to admit the exposure was excellent. A very difficult to capture scene IMO. Heaven knows I've tried on many occasions.
On the other hand, contests like this are so often skewed in favor of subjects that are favorites of the judge(s). I've entered several photo contests, whose winning images were very ordinary and "pedestrian." But they were all of India...every year, the winners were primarily images of India. Coincidence? Doubt it. ;)
Just my 2 cents.
Still...a nice story. Thanks for posting the link.

The contest theme being Urban Jungle I can see why this image was picked. For me the image struck an immediate chord, I could feel the bone chilling wet mist or fog and could easily relate or place myself in the photographers shoes. It's a good shot.

I like the shot. I like the feeling it gives me. There is a quite, reflexive feeling that downtowns have when nobody is on the streets. It's an odd feeling that makes you feel like you are the only one who ever sees the peaceful quite side of a busy city street. It reminds me of the countless hours I spent as a doorman at a hotel in the wee hours of the night waiting to get off my shift. Peace, utter peace.

.....hehe Just Kidding!

But what I learned from this, is. It might be a good idea to pick up a little $99 shirt pocket camera!

Another Reason why I dont enter contests!

Look at the 4 runner ups! This shot could be shot by anyone with a point and shoot. I bet Canon had something to do with this outcome because think of all the people who are going to claim "I dont need that big camera, I can get by with this little point and shoot!"

Crock of ******** if you ask me....LOL

Wow, this really struck a nerve I guess

"I don´t need a big camera, I can get by with the little point and shoot." I am curious what a BIG camera is. I really don´t think Canon had anything to do with the contest being won by a photographer with a less than $100 used point and shoot Canon camera.. I know for a fact it was the people that sell that "$20 plastic tripod" that paid off the judge. Just this morning I found five $20 plastic tripods for sale on Craigslist.org and by the time I was able to reach the sellers they were all sold. How in the world am I ever going to take a winning photo with my Canon A520 if I can´t buy a "$20 plastic tripod"? Somebody, PLEASE somebody point me in the right direction to where I can get my much needed $20 plastic tripod". Wait a minute, there is still over 3 hours before the San Diego Chargers take the field and that should be enough time for me to scour the local thrift shops. Maybe, just maybe I can score a "$20 plastic tripod" for less than $20 at one of the local thrift stores. I am outta here and on a mission. No photos until I get my "$20 plastic tripod". Ah crud, I just read I will have to sit outside in crummy weather for 3 hours with my Canon A520 point and shoot camera on my $20 plastic tripod , like the winning photographer did, for the winning shot.
To many requirements for me to ever become a winning photographer. Screw it, back to making balsa wood surfboards. Much easier for me to have the wood shipped from South America.

You should write for the David Letterman show...********

That was some of the funniest stuff I read in awhile. I'd love to see some photos of your balsa wood surf boards!

Sounds pretty sweet
