So where did you find your alternator? Price ok?

G'day Pete,

I managed to get it through Auto Parts which is a local parts store at Victoria Point here where I live. We managed to find it at JAS at Willawong. Unfortunately JAS only sell to the trade, so I had to get the guys at Auto Parts to get it for me. The price was $625 + tax. So it ended up about $670 or so. The bloke at JAS said there were literally hundreds of different listed alternators for a Canter and that this one seems the be the most rare of them. I guess the big plus is that he also said it was a genuine part and not a Chinese knock off.

I also got offered one for $890, so I guess this was a good price.

Hope this helps.

If you want the number I will get it today for you.

Back home

G'day blokes and blokettes,

Well I arrived back home and spent the afternoon mucking with the truck pulling all the doors apart and cleaning them out thoroughly and prepping them for some sound deadener when it arrives... I hope early next week.

Unfortunately my holidays ends tomorrow and like many back to work on Tuesday. So I will be limited to evening or the weekends to do any work. This weekend is my volunteer weekend of which I do one weekend every 4 weeks, so it maybe another week before I get much done of note.

I pick up the seats on Friday all rebuilt and recovered. Should look good.

I also bought a 3000lb (about 1300kg electric winch off fleabay to use for the spare wheels. I just need to mount it, after I have pulled it apart and made sure it actually has grease and lube inside.

Thats about it for now.

Front Bushes

G'day blokes

I am thinking of swapping out the front suspension bushes. A very easy task for the mechanically inclined.

Is there a preference for brands or kits to redo the front spring bushes?

Also I am looking to swap a tipper rear end off my Canter for a pantech. Any suggestions on where to advertise or look???

Gidday...

Ok a little update.

I have been in conversation with a bloke interested in swapping my tipper for a pantech. But I haven't seen the pantech as yet . So a good possibility so far.

I managed to get the spring bushes done. Like I said, not to hard for the spanner inclined.

I had to fill the tank up again today and worked out that I am getting 17 l/100km fuel consumption. Damn good I reckon for a truck with a tare weight of 2700kgs. And only slightly worse than my Nissan Patrol with a 3.0l donk. I think the main issue is I have a tendency to drive it like I stole it. Today on the motorway I saw 118 kph on the GPS, which I thought was bloody amazing that it would go that fast on a flattish road.

I am going to wait now until I get my pantech before fitting the winch for the spare tyres as it may not be that far away.

I would like to find some fitted carpets for the floors to fit a Canter. Anyone know of any such animal???

Apart from that I think I have just about finished with the cab at the moment and feel ready to move to the box for some serious fitting out. So I need this bloke to get on and make a decision.

Holidays due in a couple of weeks... Yehaaaaa!!!

There is a guy in the us selling fitted floormats. If you need someone to take delivery and forward I would be happy to help.

Some dimensions

I took some dimensions off my truck this afternoon to cast some numbers about for a build and I was quite surprised.

How does this compare with others.

Ground to floor of tray at rear wheels 1100mm
Ground to top of roof at front wheels 2400mm
Add 450mm to top of stack
Ground to inside door sill at passengers side seat 1200mm.

I am quite surprised at how tall it is. Seems easy enough to get in and out of even for a fat old bugger like me.

With the coils fitted to my FG84, the top of my subframe is 1200mm off the ground.
That's the dry height; it drops about 40mm with all the tanks full (300L fuel and 260L water).

My measurements are nearly identical.

Currently my ground to floor of camper (full loaded weight) is 1118 mm
and ground to top of the roof at the front wheels is 2438 mm
These are with 940 mm tall tires.
I want the overall height of my truck as low as possible, so plans include stepping the camper deck at the front and building wheel pockets in the rear (they will be under the kitchen and couch) to get the camper floor 760 to 815mm above the ground, keeping the overall height under 2950mm. If I install my parabolic springs they will add 75 mm to all these heights.

Planned (not current):diagram measurements are +/- 50 mm

G'day all,

I have seen some pictures at some stage of a Canter with yellow front hub step rings. Are they available for Joe Public use or only for mines? Where are they available from?

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Hi Turtle,

To the best of my knowledge, step rings are no longer legal in most or all Australian states. Occasionally I see some on fire or mine trucks but even those are slowly being removed due to safety concerns. You could call Transport to confirm but I don't like your chances.
Sorry.

Regards
John.
