Reliance water containers have been around for years. For example their folding jugs. A more recent version of the folding ones is their Fold-a-carrier II. In moderate use I haven't had a problem with it, though I certainly wouldn't trust its spout to be secure in the car.

I also bought one of their rigid ones, Aqua-Tainer, when I was looking for something that had a lower profile than the 3gal Rubbermaid. However the outer spout ring cracked when I tightened the spigot too much. They do sell as replacement spigot unit.

Could you elaborate on how yours broke? Was there problem with the spigot, or a seam in the can or something else? During ordinary handling, or with a drop, or what ever?

I've shifted to using smaller containers, such as 50oz bottles of water that I get from the store, or the more rectangular 1/2 gallon juice bottles. It seems like a wiser idea to keep my water a number of containers, rather than risk spillage from a larger one. Also I don't have a convenient place to carry a single large container.

Reliance is pure ********, in my opinion.

We've relied on the Reliance 7 gallon Jumbo-Tainer for the last six years or so. A small stress point finally split and developed a leak earlier this year on a trip to North Carolina, nothing some duct tape couldnt' fix in a pinch.

Spigot seals tight, easy to handle when full, 5+ years of trouble free service...we now own two.

I might feel that "Reliance" would be worth another try if all three, brand new containers had not completely failed on me within the first couple of days under very light use.

Light blue one (brand new) crumpled at the bottom after just a few miles of travel with a load of water. Creased and cracked. Absolutely ridiculous.

Dark blue "Aqualux" problems are all in the lid. The lid on the first one failed cracked all the way around the threads and water was pouring out.
And no, I did not overtighten it.

The second one to give out cracked in the lid where the spigot screws in and out. No overtightening there either and even before the lid cracked, it leaked from that spot as there is no gasket to seal it.

Super crappy stuff, no doubt about it.

All three of mine are going back to the vendor tomorrow with a few choice words.

I really hate stuff you cannot rely on especially from a company what has been around for years.

Don't really understand what good these items are if you cannot put them in a car and drive somewhere with them without them leaking.

ONLY military spec stuff from now on.

Hope this clarifies things.

Get some Scepter cans and you'll never need another water can.

I dunno, on our last baja trip 2 or 3 folks had the Scepter Fuel cans and they were leaking fuel like crazy from the lids! I remember Justins leaking all over the trailer and someone else had 2 of them that were leaking as well!

I wasnt at all impressed with the Scepters and would stay away from them!! Problem is, there arent all that many options! :(

No offense guys, Just my .02

I would give reliance a call. i have been using a 7G big blue thing that looks like a cube with a handle for ten years without any real problem. Don't get me wrong, it is definitely not a high quality product, but what you are describing sounds like a moulding error. I would bet there are a bunch of them from that manufacturing batch with similar problems.

I use these containers extensively. My department also uses them for student field trips. I have my current batch of 3 for about 100 days of field work over the last two years with only one problem, it is hard to get the spigot pointed down. That has been my only gripe.

Sorry you had that experience, Skillet. Leaking water containers are a nuisance as well as inconvenient.

We, however, like our Reliance containers. We did have one to spring a leak at a crease after years of use (improperly stored by me), but two that we purchased in 1987 are still in use.

I do, however, add shock absorbtion to any container while in transit. The roads we travel are rough and if a container is sitting on the floor and not protected from shock, almost any plastic will suffer to some degree. We have several sheets of foam rubber and/or styrofoam (saved from packing cartons) that we can place beneath the water jugs.

Next week on our trip down to Punta Bufeo, I'll be transporting a half-dozen gal. plastic jugs of distilled water. I can almost certainly rely on one or two having leaks in them if I don't place them on the rubber and stow them amidship.

With the collapsible type I have found that storing them full and away from sunlight is better for the plastic. Fewer creases that way. The rigid plastic ones I just keep away from UV.

I'll cross my fingers. I've got two of the green 6 gallon Reliance containers. No problems so far, just have to remember not to set them in the truck with the air vent down or they will leak.
