Oh, forgot to add that my only multi-day break down occurred within one week of having a major service done to my Tundra before going on a long (5000 mile +/-) trip. Three days stuck in a hotel while I waited for parts to make it across the country. I should have left it well enough alone and done the service when I got home.

Lol so "macho does fit " see you take all precautions when out and about . The problem with not doing services up front when exploring overlaying etc... Is your putting yourself in a bad position up front.
As for your climbing you certainly sound like you take every precaution.
Taking precautions on the rocks or trails makes sense, you just proved it with your last post! Are there ever any guarantees , no .
So should we just throw all caution to the wind... Again no.
Stuff happens . You just don't need to up your percentages by ignoring your equipment.
He'll lots of folks think I'm nuts to enjoy the things I do. But while I like the thrill , I'm not going to up my chances of failure because I ignored keeping my gear tight just to say " I told you so" .
You sound like you have a very interesting life.
Be well and be safe

The chat was great.

Maybe now you'll understand why I don't get bent out of shape over a minor mechanical setback. I wouldn't drive across the outback in a vehicle with a known problem, but driving through middle America overdue for a service isn't exactly "dangerous".

Exactly. I have free towing on my insurance. ;)

Happy I think you should back off a bit, nobody is disagreeing with you about maintenance. But if you have no faith in a Toyota you should be driving a Land Rover or a Jeep. The point of the thread was to show the haters are wrong, again. I have driven to Panama and back twice, mostly solo in a super charged Tacoma. I have also done week long trips in the Arizona desert in a rock crawler on 40" tires. So I am not really sure who you are preaching to but it certainly is not me.

Oh ya and I found my CV boots are leaking after the trip. Considering most of the rest of this winter my driving will be to the grocery store I don't feel the need to do the re-boot tomorrow.

What it didn't fail ;)

No sir, now if it was a Land Rover.....

Was looking for you at KOH. We had a great time, I rallied my 100 pretty good between Pit 2A and 2B about a thousand times (it felt like) during the main race on Friday. We bailed Saturday morning and burned over to Parker AZ to watch the Parker 425 desert race. Good times... we'll have to catch up one of these times!

What you couldn't find a stock 100 in all that dust!? That was a first for me, camping for 3-days in a sand storm. I might just have to go the wussy route next time and rent an RV, that or find a better camping spot. This being my 3rd trip to KoH I am getting familiar with JV, really want to take the Patrol down next time. Did you see a big huge silver Yukon on 37's and Kings? That is Jason's and man did he do it up nicely, since he now has 3 kids he went full sized. That thing can do 60mph through the whoops no probs, I was impressed.

I didn't see any 200's down there and only one or two 100s. On the way down through the blizzard I drove through, I passed a bunch of HWY Dept. trucks spraying salt melter, the liquid kind. Didn't wash the truck until I got home, zero rust from it. Toyota sure did rust proof these trucks well.

Besides the maintenance I need to do, my suspension needs an upgrade. 16yr old shocks fade fast in the whoops. Got to love Toyotas though, I think I changed the shocks out on my 2001 2500HD 2-3yrs after buying it new.

Cheers

You'd LOVE Burning Man then!! If you take anything but a rental there, you're crazy! Hmmmm, maybe you're crazy if you go there at all...

I didn't say I liked camping in the sand storm! Heard all about Burning Man, don't think it is so much my thing at this stage in life. I grew up going to festivals, lot's of drugs and freaks. I went to the Oregon Country Fair 13yrs in a row or something like that, way back when things were much more in the open, like naked people and drug use. I was about 18yrs old when I saw Spoon Man (from the Soundgarden song) playing his spoons naked at the mainstage night show. I went to Lalapalooza #1 & 2 back then too and many other festivals. Got my fill of all that kind of stuff when I was young. If it wasn't for Johnson Valley being an awesome place and friends of mine going to KoH I would probably skip it. And I will take Baja or any trip to Latin America any day over KoH. But KoH is fun and JV is awesome and I would like to take my Patrol down there some time and give it a go on the trails.

Cheers

We think alike! I like my humans a few at a time! A trip south of the border trumps any festival I've ever heard of!

Just an opinion. I do preventive maintenance on my rigs. When the book says do at 100k I do at 90. And so on. I don't understand any thrill in seeing if you can squeeze a bit extra out at yours your families and you rigs parel !
But that's me, the fun is the adventure, not stuck fixing your rig out in the middle of nowhere.
But that's just me .

I wouldn't be surprised if Ian didn't have a JDM diesel, extremely modified, sitting in the garage itching to be installed into the 100. I'd put $5.00 on Ian wanting it to break just so he'd have the excuse to do something special.

He's special that way.

No fair, you have been to my shop.

I think the 100 will stay fairly stock. A bit of lift, some bumpers + sliders and some new wheels plus new 33's is about all I want to do to it right now. I got a really nice 62/80+Chevy to build that I would rather sink money into. The 100 was a good call though for me, it is a great grocery getter.

Cheers
