yup seeing as my girlfriend is making me sell my ticket getting impreza. im really looking for a disco, and im wondering if my choice would be a wise one. pretty much i know nothing about land rovers, but they seem to be a choice among the expo crowd.

so what are the pro's and cons of a disco as a DD/expo vehicle?

Not to be rude, but there are 4 threads asking the same or a similar question as this on the first two pages. Allow me to summarize after asking a few questions.

What are your intentions for the vehicle? DD or expo or trail rig?

What are your limitations (space, number of family members, etc)

What are your budgets?

How mechanically inclined are you?

I came from Subaru's too....so I can tell you that owning a Rover is whole different experience. One thing is for sure, you probably won't get the same number of speeding tickets with a Disco as with an Impreza. (LOL...if it was turbo charged, then the Impreza probably has more horsepower.)

Before going and finding a Disco though, you need to spend lots of time reading up on them over on sites like http://www.discoweb.org and http://www.landroverforums.com/forum/index.php or http://www.landroversonly.com.

The above sites will provide a ton of information on the Discovery (and other models), and have write-ups comparing the DI to the DII, tips for what to look out for, and a large number of questions that have been answered for others. (One word of caution, D-web can be a rough place for someone new to Rovers...search before asking questions there, expect harsh responses, and above all have a thick skin.)

If you're looking at a Disco remember that you're looking at a truck that is at least 7 years old. Be patient, find one with complete service records, get it checked out by a good independent Rover mechanic, and expect to spend lots of time with it when you buy it. Know that you will always be hunting for 'the next thing' to fix...there is no end to fixing things on a truck like this. It's just a matter of whether it's a big problem or a little one.

Oh...and x2 for what Sam said above.

Pros: Great road manners, great comfort and ride. Can seat 7 (if equipped w/ jump seats and 2 are small). Very capable off road (be sure to get a model with cdl). Great visibility.

Cons: Expect about 16 mpg max. I average 13 city/hwy. No tolerance for delaying preventive maintenance. If it hasn't had the head gaskets done it WILL be needing it. If you are having the work done by others and getting the parts through them it will eat your wallet. If the front drive shaft hasn't been rebuilt with greasable ujoints it will eventually go and destroy at least the trannie case. Be sure to keep it greased. Keep the cooling system serviced. You DO NOT want it to overheat.

That being said, I love my DII. Did the HG on it right after purchase and other than pm it has been trouble free for 20k miles.

Really?? You are buying another car because

1) your girlfriend told you to??
2) you think the LR wont exceed the speed limit??

I think you either need a new girlfriend, or tell your current one to quit telling you what to do. You also need to learn how to quit gettiing caught speeding...meaning quit being stupid. The rover isnt going to stop you from getting speeding tickets.

Additionally, if your girlfriend is telling you to sell a car because of speeding tickets, how do you think she'll react when you have to spend more time, effort and money maintaining the Rover.

Lastly, do a search, this has been discussed many times. Just buy the disco because you want one - and enjoy the hell out of it!!

i searched, didnt find anything that relevant to daily life. mostly people complaining about gas mileage, or boasting about off road capability. i know it was a bit vague and i should have gone into more detail the first time.

as for my girlfriend saying my car has to go, we agreed when i bought it that if it got to costing me too much it'd have to go. there is no reason to fight with the woman i love and live with over a car, and plus for a month or so i've been wanting to get back out to camping and geocashing. which is really hard to do in a FWD sporty import.

What else is there? :D

I'll double up what everyone has said above, follow the links in dcarr's for more in-depth and DI or DII specific technical questions.

With LR's it's all about finding one that's been cared for and then once you've got it, keeping up with the preventative maintenance. If you can do some of your own wrenching you'll save a bundle.

How much for the Subaru? Are you sure you want to smoke the rover crack? Why not just slow down and not get as many tickets because the rover repairs are going to cost just as much as a Subaru getting tickets.

Well, that really depends on how fast he's driving! LOL But your point is correct.

I say just go buy one and join the cult.....errr, I mean, club.

Or keep the subaru and buy a rover. I have two track cars(both FI) and two rovers, be smart about it and you can save a ton on repairs, etc. But that leads to my original questions.

What are your intentions for the rover? There are 03's in my area for 5k, there is an 02 that needs headgaskets selling for $2000 negotiable. If you dont know how to work on these trucks they get super pricey.

GeoCashing you dont need a truck for, just a GPS. Look on this forum, a LOT of people camp in 2wd trucks, suv's, vans, station wagons, etc. A buddy of mine goes on week long camping trips in his CRX. It can be done if you pack smartly and don't buy into the whole RTT, snowpeak, fridge, port a potty fad.

You will get a lot of insightful comments if you answer the questions posed earlier...
