I've reviewed the footage in slow motion and found numerous flaws in his logic and test methods.

Please instruct him to ship both vehicles to North Carolina for a proper, extended, and scientifically valid field test. I promise to send them both back in 5 years, complete with charts and graphs.

Yes, and all proper scientific tests must have a control group. I'll take on the burden of a second pair of these for that control group.:REExeSquatsHL1:

great videos, i like the detailed comparisons.

It was obvious that the Land Cruiser was better in so many practical aspects- better driver position, comfort, loading, access, passenger space, lockers, onroad drivability... the fact it seals out dust(!)

his assesment that the offroad capability is about equal and that he would not trade the LC for a LR nor purchase the LR tells you all you need to know.

I understand why trac is good but I do agree that in more serious situations, the lockers are the only way to go. If they are not avail on the LR, that automatically would delete it as an purchase decision for me.

I laughed w/ he engine braked down the hill in the LR and said, "quite horrible actually.." LOL english understatement

LR is a much better looking truck, thats for sure.

I felt the off road comments made sense...my 80 series, with coils, could outflex my Troopy any day...keeping wheels on the ground = better traction. Now...is it enough for me to worry about, no; but the comparison is fair.

Differential locks are an option on the TLC, while traction control is standard on the Defender.

exactly. my father having own a Fj-80 it came without lockers until he added ARB's to it. then you couldn't stop it. well until I got my Land Rover heck he still showed me up dang lockers lol.

but a great video of two iconic 4x4's both a quite similar too

both have the word "LAND" in it.

Scientific testing aside, they've got 26 videos posted, all overland related. They've got driving techniques, a supercool 2-door to 4-door Land Cruiser truck conversion, and my favorite...the HiLux test; with one scene of video proof of the Third Goat Event!

Scene clearly shows the HiLux rounding a corner; first goat standing across the road, second one crossing in front of the truck, and the third waiting in ambush....:cow:

Personal Opinion Warning

I have always preferred a user selectable, positive locking differential over techno-wizardry. There are times that an open differential will be a better option than any type of posi, limited slip, T/C, locker, or spool, so that is why I prefer select ability.

I can appreciate the attempt at neutrality in the comparison, but the host did seem biased to me.

I would gladly take either vehicle. I would probably put ARBs or some other user controlled positive locking differentials in the Rover though, but that's just my opinion.

both great videos - as well as trucks. A shame we can't get vehicles like that here (even if I could still never afford either new).

I think the host did a good job of being fair - it is obvious he loves both platforms - and points out weaknesses in both as well as strengths. We are a crowd that knows the difference between lockers and traction control, but most people out there don't. He's comparing factory to factory fittings and he was fair in showing what the box can do without flipping a switch and with flipping a switch. Seemed reasonable to me.

Alas, my unlocked 4Runner with Traction control takes me anywhere I need to go, and most places I want to go, so I will continue to live vicariously off the cool trucks overseas.

The video must have changed to another, as I saw no comparison of the vehicles off road in that segment. Only engines, overall outside appearance, rear doors, and interior.

Great vid. But I find it funny that the Defender is refered to as "far superior" because it has Trac-Control instead of Lockers... Basicly the Defender has a complicated system that... wait for it, locks the diffs/transfers power to different wheels. Any driver worth their metal would have locked the Cruiser right off and have walked up everything in sight. But then, he "has lots of experience" so what do I know

I also HATE the interior of the new defender. It's just plain awful IMO.

Both neat trucks for sure, but I'll take the Lockers and the 70 series any day. Shocker isn't it ;)

Cheers

I must have missed this post the first couple of rounds.

I'm thoroughly enjoying these videos. Thanks for posting them up.

I hate foreigners who show off their trucks. Every time one of these Australian or African yokels shows us Americans his diesel LC 78 or Defender 110, it's like dangling a huge sandwich in front of a starving man.

With that said, I thought it was a pretty fair-handed trial. My only question is this...after years and years of use in dusty, dirty, rough conditions, in extreme temps, with some possible muddy dunkings, which will perform better on demand, the clunk-and-thunk locker in the Cruiser, or the traction control system on the Defender? Which will be easier/cheaper to fix? Which would better lend itself to field repair?

In any case, I'd be pleased as punch to drive either one myself and find out.
