I know a bunch of you on this site have the venerable 1st Gen runner, I am looing at a 1985 with a 22r engine, 237,000 miles and in very good shap efor the year. Down side is seller doesn't have much history on the vehicle. Is the 22r an evil twin to the 22re?

I wouldn't say evil. :)

The long blocks are identical in the 22R and 22R-E, so the good and bad is the same per year. The post 8/84 block is the one with a single row timing chain but lower deck. So this block would be the same as any 22R/22R-E up to 1995. The upside is that EFI from any 1984+ truck will swap right on. The downside, well I guess that would be that with the lower deck you can't do the 20R head swap on them.
